several neighbours.
His love of collecting toy tractors
and ” a visit to a toy show in Wood-
stock with fellow enthusiast Marlen
Vincent led to the Seaforth Toy, Doll
and Craft show, another large fund-
raiser for the Ag Society for the past
23 years.
"Ross touched so many people with
his energy and his personality. He
was always jolly - he never com-
plained," says Vincent, who remem-
bers long conversations about their
shared interest in toy tractors.
Ribey was also involved in the Sea -
forth Calf Club, an extension of his
childhood years in 4-H.
Next to Christmas, Fall Fair time
was his favourite time of year. He
was an active competitor in the
homecraft section, entering jams,
jellies, pickles and chili sauces and
baking pies for the President's Pie
Competition.
"'Have some of my first prize pick-
les,' he loved to say. And, he was al-
ways up at midnight baking a pie
the night before the competition,"
says Joyce.
"There is going to be a big hole in
the Ag Society without Ross," says
Marie Hicknell-Feeney. "He did a lot
of good for the Society and was in-
volved in every aspect of the place.

Lyle Haney,
who has been best
friends with Ribey
since Ribey moved
to . Seaforth and
worked for Haney's
dad driving tractor
between funerals,
says Ribey's sen-
sitivity combined
with his sense of humour made him
a special person.
"We always joked that he was our
friendly neighbourhood undertak-
er and we never left home without
him," says Haney, adding that their
friendship was formed during three
Haney family funerals in 1975.
"How many hundreds of thou-
sands of people has he opened .that
front door to for visitation? And, how
many families know Ross Ribey be-
cause he's been there for them dur-
ing a family funeral? He will be dear-
ly missed," he says.
As a longtime member of the Sea -
forth Lions Club, Ribey was instru-
mental in creating a nighttime San-
ta Claus parade, the first of its kind
in Ontario 29 years ago.
"I remember we were all over the
countryside that first year, picking

Bob Fisher says Ribey was always
working at Lions Park, planting
trees for Lions Club members who
had died.
"He was such a community activist
- he gave 110 per cent to everything
he belonged to and he would help
anyone with anything. A lot of things
he did were behind the scenes, which
people didn't realize," he says.
Gord Rimmer says Ribey had a
large commercial -sized barbecue he
used to provide for Lions Club func-
tions and anyone else who needed
it.•
"I don't think people have any idea
of the half of what he did for the com-
munity," he says.

thought about retiring from his job.
"There isn't a regret. He enjoyed
every day of his life and he loved
what he did. He couldn't think of do-
ing anything else," she says.
Ross Ribey leaves his wife Joyce,
his children Andrea, Bradley, Brent
and Cheryl and her husband Pat
Coyne and grandchildren Tyler and
Brooke, along with many other rela-
tives and friends.
