Wanda and Milton Dietz win Seaforth's humanitarian award
Rides to church, grocery shopping and delivering church service tapes help local seniors
Susan Hundertmark
When they were just starting out
as young farmers in Tuckersmith,
just outside of Egmondville, Milton
and Wanda Dietz didn't have a vehi-
cle and depended on the neighbours
to get them to church every Sunday.
So, it's only fitting, they say, that
they are now providing rides to lo-
cal seniors when they have no other
way to get to church or to get their
grocery shopping done.
The couple have won_ this year's
humanitarian award in the Seaforth
citizenship awards.
As members of Egmondville United
Church, the Dietzes "work tirelessly
assisting our senior members," says
their nominator Ina McGrath.
"Wanda's and Milton's dedication
to our senior citizens have. had a
positive impact on many lives in our
community," says McGrath in her
nomination letter.
The transportation for seniors be-
gan, say the Dietzes, when Pastor
Steve Hildebrand began running the
church.
"People would say they'd like to get
out to church but they couldn't so we
took it on," says Milton.
Wanda adds that taking a few ex-
tra passengers with them in their
Dodge mini -van doesn't take much
extra time out of their Sunday.

"We just leave a little sooner and it
fills up the pews a .little more," she
says.
The two also took on the task of
making tapes of recordings of the
weekly church service and delivering
them to seniors who are shut-ins or
living at nursing homes. They esti-
mate they've made about 1,000 tapes
since they began.
