"We were chosen as one of the best projects in Ontario so it's great ex- posure at the provincial level," says Gateway's scientific director Dr. Claudio Munoz. Munoz submitted "Gateway: An infrastructure for rural health re- search" under the category of "Meet- ing Community Needs Through In- tegrated Healthcare" in order to be accepted as an exhibit. "Research fits into integrated care since research will help physicians. provide better care to their patients," says Munoz. "To be accepted means that Gate- way is being celebrated by the Minis- try of Health and that's very impor- tant to us. It's .what we need to keep moving forward," he says. Munoz says attention given to Gateway at the Toronto Expo could lead to more partnerships, particu- larly with other ■ agencies that work Devereaux brings healthcare to SWEA table under the umbrel- Gateway was, one of only five health- care projects chosen to exhibit from the South LHIN and one of two from Huron County. "None of the others were like Gate- way. We are the only rural health re- search institute," she says. The Celebrating Innovation in Health Care Expo also recognized Healthkick Huron and the Huron Family Health Team in 2007 with an award in the innovations in health human resources awards category. Devereaux adds that Sea - forth with its Gateway Rural Health Research Institute and Huron Healthkick initiatives is well-positioned to generate new healthcare jobs in the re- gion. "Healthkick is developing a local workforce with its nurs- ing and pharmacy technician courses. And, it's motivat- ing kids to enter healthcare careers with its MedQuest camps," she says. Devereaux says she got posi- tive comments about what is happening in healthcare in the region at the SWEA meet- ing. She adds that being able to focus on the economic benefits of healthcare as an industry can be a positive focus when manufacturing jobs are being lost. She says more attention could be spent in the area to- wards building seniors' resi- dences and nursing homes or designing furniture and ve- hicles that would cater to the needs of an aging population. "I have a car that tells me when I leave my keys in the ignition but we need a car that says, 'Your cane is in the back seat' for our seniors," says De- vereaux. "That's the kind of forward thinking we need to accommodate the aging baby boomers," she says. Devereaux adds that attend- ing SWEA meetings can bring attention to the fact that the region needs sustainable funding to answer the needs around a healthcare work- force. "The fact that we have aging baby boomers didn't happen overnight. Huron County can be on the leading edge in the development of these things," she says.
