Heritage projects OK'd
Six heritage -themed projects will be moving forward
thanks to a thumbs up by Huron County Council's Nov
19 committee 7of-the-whole session.
In making a presentation on the county's recently intro-
duced $20,000 Huron Heritage Fund program, director
of cultural services Beth Ross noted seven groups - six
of which qualify - applied for the funding that allows for
one-time grants of up to $5,000, which must be matched
or exceeded by the applicant.
Coun. Bernie MacLellan (Huron East) expressed con-
cern with one applicant that is seeking a $5,000 grant for
a $15,000 project to rehabilitate statues on his Central
Huron property.
"To me it sounds like we're repairing someone's lawn
ornaments," said MacLellan.
Coun. John Grace (Goderich), however, took exception
to MacLellan's assertion, and argued the statues' preser-
vation is worthy of county support.
The projects moving forward, once county council en-
dorse the COW's recommendation, include a $5,000
grant for the $15,000 restoration of the George Laith-
waite statues at Apple Park; $1,500 for a $3,000 book
on the Work of Johan Gemeinhardt by applicant Phil
Gemeinhardt; $1,155 for the $2,310 painting project for
the Seaforth Round House by the Seaforth Agricultur-
al Society; $3,000 for the $21,975 Heritage Committee
$la uing project by the Huron East Heritage Committee;
900 for the $2,547 book project, The Wexford: Elusive
Shipwreck of the Great Storm, 1913, by applicant Paul
Carroll; $1,496 for the $2,992 walking tour project by
the Bayfield Historical Society, and $4,750 for the $9,500
preservation project of RCAF Memorial at Centralia by
the Municipality of South Huron.

disciplinary policy is necessary to reinforce the message
that the law must not be broken.
"If you get caught by us, this is what happens," he said,
adding that the municipality will not wait until someone
is charged by the police before acting.
"It's the same as smoking - it's the law so you can't do
it," said McLachlan, adding that he understands that
while police can charge anyone driving .
Bill 118, the Countering Distracted Driving and Pro-
moting Green Transportation Act, 2009, prohibits a tele-
vision, computer or other device with . a display screen
if the screen is visible to the driver, along with the use
of hand-held wireless communications devices including
cellphones and Blackberry devices.
The Huron East policy sets out that an employee caught
using a cellphone while driving is told he or she must
comply immediately during the first offence, is given
written notice after the second offence and is suspended
until the end of the day after the third offence.
The fourth offence brings a one -day suspension with-
out pay, the fifth offence brings a three-day suspension
without pay and the sixth offence results in termination
with cause.
McKillop Coun. Andrew Flowers asked if Huron East
will provide employees with ear pieces so they can be
contacted without breaking the law.
"There's nothing more aggravating than trying to get
ahold of (Public Works Coordinator) Barry (Mills) when
he's driving down the road," said Flowers.
Mills told council administration is working on getting
some Bluetooth technology to solve that problem.
