Seaforth daycare to offer care for infants starting
Susan Hundertinark
With its . Best Start program and
Before and After School programs
moved into Seaforth Public School
in October, the Seaforth Cooperative
Children's Centre now has the space
to offer an infant daycare program.
"It's been talked about during the
last couple of years but the push
came on this year in response to the
full-day early learning program,"
says Naomi Pelss, director of the
SCLC.
The provincial government has
committed to providing full-day pro-
gramming, combining childcare and
education, for four and five -year-olds
across Ontario beginning in Septem-
ber, 2010.
".'hat's going to affect us in some
way but we hope we can maintain
our partnership with the schools be-
cause we have a great relationship,
with the schools," says Pelss.
With a handful of infants on the
waiting list for daycare, Pelss is hop-
ing to fill the 10 -infant program at
SCLC.
Currently, renovations are being
completed turning half of the chil-
dren's centre building into a space
for infants, aged 0-18 months.
What used to be a space for kinder-
garten and children ages 'six to 12 is
being transformed into a sleep room
that will hold 10 cribs, a play space
for infants that will house low tables
and carpet toys and a storage area
for big strollers that will hold several
infants.
Because infant daycare has a ratio
of one daycare worker to three in-
fants, Pelss says the rates will be a
little higher than those for toddlers
and preschoolers.
SCCC charges $29 for a full day
for toddlers and $28 for a full day
for preschoolers: And, while the final
rate hasn't been
approved yet for
infants, Pelss
says it could be
as high as $40 for
the full day.
That's why
she's encouraging
parents to look
into subsidies
that are available
through Huron
County's Chil-
dren's Services
department.

Nathan, the eight -month-old son of Naomi Pelss, Seaforth Cooperative Children's
Centre director, tests out one of 10 new cribs that will accommodate infants at the
centre, as his mom and program supervisor Paula Stackhouse look on.
"Infant care is a bit more pricey and
people may be eligible for partial of
full subsidy - it's definitely worth
looking into," she says.
Because many mothers are opting
to take a full year of maternity leave
these days, Pelss says offering infant

babies to go into daycare right away
instead of finding an alternative ar-
rangment until they're 18 months
old.
"If a child's older sibling is here,
it's a lot more convenient to bring
the baby here. We might see a lot of
one -year-olds coming here now," says
Pelss. •
Daycare space is also being reno-
vated to create a family resource
centre that will include a library and
chairs and tables that can be used as
a meeting room.
Pelss says play groups for parents
and children will be offered.in the re-
source centre along with the services
of speech pathologists and resource
consultants.
"It'll be a one-stop hub for parents,"
she says.
Play groups offered at SCCC in-
clude the Mother Goose program
and The Bus, which will be stopping
at the Seaforth daycare every other
week.
Pelss says SCCC is one of the last
daycare centres in the area to offer
infant daycare.
"It was a space issue and we weren't
sure of the need for it but we're hop-
ing now that it will fill up fast," she
says. "Others in the county are full
so we're hoping we'll do the same."
