St. Nick's shopping
day set for Dec. 5
Sus,En Hundertmark
The St. Nick's Christmas Shopping Day will be offered
for a fourth 4year at St. Thomas Anglican Church on Sat-
urday, Dec. 5.
"It's going to be great again this year with numbers
equal to or better than last year's," says organizer Susan
Earl, adding that people have been stopping her on the
street telling her how much they're looking forward to the
event.
A dedicated core of about six craftspeople make gifts and
others offer donations that children, aged two to 13 can
buy for their family members.
Last year, 150 children bought 973 Christmas gifts for
family members at the shopping event.
Earl says this year shoppers will be limited to buy for
their immediate families since last year's lists were some-
times so long that children who shopped later on in the day
didn't have a very good selection of gifts to choose from.
"We thought that was a little unfair," says Earl. "We'd
really like to see each child be able to buy for their mom
and dad and immediate family."
Earl says she's hoping that families who haven't attend-
ed in the past will give the event a try this year.
She says she's heard from parents that the St. Nick's
Shopping Day is helping to focus children on giving on
Christmas morning.
"It sounds like children are getting more excited about
what they have to give than what they're going to get. It's
changing the attitude to Christmas," she says.
Volunteer elves are on hand to help each child find the
gifts on his or her list, gift -wrap and tag the presents dur-
ing the event which goes from 10 a.m. until noon.
As well, storyteller Trish MacGregor will be on hand for
the second year to entertain children as they wait their
turns to shop.
While Earl says she'd like to see some new volunteers
getting involved in the making of the gifts, a group of area
women is helping local painter Heather DeJong create
some hand -painted wooden gifts to offer for the St. Nick's
event.
Also, volunteers gathered last Sunday at Trinity Angli-
can Church in Mitchell to put together layered soup mixes
and desserts in jars to offer as St. Nick's gifts.
"They went over very well last year," says Earl.
