She grew up in Seaforth, at- tended the former public school here and graduated from Sea - forth District High School – the same site where she now serves as principal of SPS. When former principal Cheryl Peach was appointed a regional environmental educational lead with the Ministry of Educa- tion, the Avon Maitland District School Board approached Van Poucke to fill in. She had already spent 'four years at Wingham Public School and a few months at Clinton Public School as vice-principal. On Nov 5, she took the new po- sition in her hometown. "It's very exciting," she says. "They're doing great things in this building. The teachers work so hard with the kids and you can see they really care." Van Poucke . says her number one priority at the school is to create a positive learning environment, as well as having the students "strive to do their best." This includes continuing to fo- cus on maintaining strong EQAO scores among students, who were recognized last April with a Deter- mination in Academic Achievement award from the Fraser Institute for their notable EQAO results. "I want to keep the school going in the direction it's going, because it's fabulous here," she says. She says she'd also' like to invite the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority to come in and do an en- vironmental presentation for the school. As a newcomer to the job, Van Poucke defines the role of a principal as "being a role model and leading the students and staff in the right direction."
