Incorrectly
assessed
farms will
cost
Huron East
A larger than usual number of Huron
East farms incorrectly assessed as resi-
dential property will take $191,724.44
out of the tax revenue to Huron East,
Huron County and both school boards,
Huron East council learned at its Nov 3
meeting.
Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight said Huron
East would take a hit of $58,500.41, a
possibility he anticipated last year when
the Municipal Propdrty Assessment Cor-
poration (MPAC) closed its property as-
sessments rolls earlier than usual.
Knight said that normally a list of as-
sessed properties is shared with the mu-
nicipality several weeks before the rolls
close, allowing him to send a reminder to
farm property owners who haven't filed
that year yet.
"We couldn't get a list last year and the
roll closed earlier, catching the late own-
ers so the list was exceptionally high this
year," said Knight.
"We budgeted higher to cover it so we're
not that far out," he said.
However, he pointed out that because of
the number of Huron East farms assessed
incorrectly as residential properties, Hu-
ron County will be short $94,654.07, an
amount he guessed would be the largest
in the county since Huron East has the
most farmland in Huron County.
Council supported a resolution from
Perth County, where a $440,000 shortfall
in tax revenue and $525,000 loss in pro-
vincial funding resulted from mistakes
in property assessments.
The resolution asked that MPAC be
requested to provide better reporting to
municipalities to disclose pending assess-
ment changes so that no revenue is lost
and asked that the Ministry of Finance
use the adjusted property assessments
when determining funding to municipal-
ities.
Knight said that because municipal
funding from the province is based on the
ratio between farmland and residential
property, incorrectly assessed farmland
could reduce a municipality's funding
significantly.
"It could affect the county's funding," he
said, adding that Huron East's percent-
age of farmland' is so large that he didn't
anticipate the incorrect assessments to
affect Huron East's provincial funding.
