The Rapsons recently took a , trip
touring around Lake Superior. They
left Sept. 9 and returned Sept. 27.
They boarded "The Big Canoe" at
Zbbermory for South Baymouth and
explored Manitoulin Island, then trav-
elled to Sault Ste. Marie where they
viewed the Canadian lock system used
for pleasure craft only.
St. Joseph Island, Canada's second
largest producer of maple syrup, and a
fur trading post were explored.
The Rapsons followed Highway 17 in
a counter clockwise direction through
the hills and valleys of the Canadian
Shield, camping in provincial parks on
the northern shore of Lake Superior.
They visited Ouimet Canyon, where
they purchased several pieces of am-
ethyst and pyrite from an old prospec-
tor and visited historic Fort Williams
at Thunder Bay.
Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan
provided . many
points of ' inter-
est. An ore port
at Two Harbours
had huge wharfs
to dump taconite
iron ore into lake
freighters and a
steam powered tug
boat was seen on a
museum tour.
Several hours
were spent in Du-
luth observing
boat traffic as the
aerial bridge was
lifted and lowered.
The town of
Bayfield, Wiscon-
sin was explored
along with Fort
Wilkins Historical
Park. A visit was
paid to Copper
Harbour, Michi-
gan where copper
. led people to mine
huge quantities in
*t the last century.
After several miles
on a logging road,
.74, the Estivant pine

look at 600 acres
of reserve which

pine timber from

the loggers' axe.
Some pines mea-
- sured up to five
feet in diameter.
