Mary Cardinal, site administrator
of Seaforth Community Hospital,
also praised hospital staff and vol-
unteers for the way they carried on
throughout the pandemic.
"All four of our emergency depart-
ments had people presenting with
flu-like symptoms so we are busy but
manageable and the H1N1 is hap-
pening above the normal busyness,"
she said.
Cardinal reiterated an earlier pre-
sentation by Jacquie Martin, man-
ager of critical care and medicine,
that the Alliance is experiencing a
"minor surge," which means that
seven critical care beds are currently
Jail and
full. She added that not
all seven are related to
the flu.
She said H1N1 was
first reported in the Al-
liance on Oct. 6, - add-
ing, "There is some in-
dication we are likely
at our peak."
Dr. Maarten Bok-
hout, site chief of the
Clinton hospital, said
he had personally di-
agnosed 70 people with
H1N1 since the outbreak
began two weeks ago.
"It leaves the ER a tad busier than
usual and you'll understand if I fall
asleep before 9 p.m.," he told Alli-
ance board members.

Dr. Jason Datema, Sea -

told the board that influ-

added to the usage of
Seaforth hospital's ER,
which "continues at or

Dr. Fred Jewson, site
chief of the St. Marys
hospital, told the board
in a written report that
he thinks there is some over -reaction
happening about H1N1.
"Are we all sick of ILI (influenza-
' like illness) and ;H1N1 (you know
that one) yet? Our practice nurss
and our ER personnel are doing yeo-
man's service in educating and calm-
ing the public. The media are needed
to inform the public at large but hys-
teria helps no one," he said in his re-
port.
Alliance CEO Andrew Williams
said he wanted to commend the Hu-
ron and Perth County health units
for the work they've been doing dur-
ing the 111.N1 pandemic.
"There's been a lot of criticism
across the country aimed at health
units but people are doing the best
they can with the cards they've been
dealt. Both of our health units have
been open and supportive," he said.
