in Canada," writes Catherine Trem-
blay, senior commemmoration officer
at Veterans' Affairs. `Your book is by
far the best."
In The Men of Huron, Rutledge
provides a glimpse into the past by
profiling every soldier who fought
and died from Huron County in the
Second World War.
It also contains photographs of the
soldiers' tombs as well as headshots,
when available.
"They are using my information to
upgrade their virtual war memori-
al," he said. "That's pretty cool."
The Canadian Virtual War Me-
morial: contains
records of Cana-
diati: and Allied
Veterans.
Rutledge has
been immersed
in research for
the past year,
heading to the
National Ar-
chives in Ottawa,
where he took
detailed notes on
every one of Hu-
ron County's lost
veterans.
"I feel really
close to these
guys," Rutledge
said. "I feel like I
know them more

He said he wanted to take a gen-
tler approach with his writing, es-
pecially where the wounded were
concerned. However, he said the files
at the archive described in detail not
only what happened to a soldier, but
what was done to save his life.
"I wanted to be more compassion-
ate," he said. "But I am so proud of
these guys."
Tremblay noticed.
"I love the care with which you cap-
tured the essence of those who made
the supreme sacrifice," she wrote.
The Men of Huron was funded part-
ly by a Trillium grant, and Rutledge
said he plans to apply for another for
his next project - one documenting
the men of World War One.
"I guess my passion is the veter-
ans," he said. "I'll have to spend a
lot more time in Ottawa doing re-
search."
Copies of Rutledge's book, now in
its second print, are available at
Finchers on the Square in Goderich.
