In memor of Seaforth's fallen heros from World War One
The following research was com-
pleted by Tracy McLennan, of
London, who grew up in the
Seaforth area.
Pte. Andrew William Archibald -
was born on February 4, 1892 in
Seaforth, Ontario and died on April 4,
1917. He was the son of Andrew and
Margaret S. Archibald of Seaforth,
Ontario. Pte. Archibald enlisted on
April 23, 1915 at Toronto, Ontario in
the 35th Battalion, Machine Gun
Section. The following January, he
joined the 18th Battalion in France,
and in that unit served in the Ypres
area and at St. Eloi and the Somme, In
the latter battle he was wounded on
October 19. Early in 1918 he trans-
ferred .to the 14th Machine Gun
Company. He was killed by shrapnel a
few days before the battle of Vimy
Ridge. He is buried at Ecoivre, Mont
St. Eloi, France. He was 25 years old.
Pte. Albert Russell Bates - was born
on October 29, 1898 at Goderich,
Ontario and died on September 27,
1918. He was the son of William K. and
Margaret Bates of Toronto, Ontario.
Pte. Bates enlisted at Goderich on
January 17, 1916 as a "Bugler" with
drum/bugle corps of the B -Company of
the 161st Huron Battalion. He later
became a part of "A" Company, 1st
Battalion of the Canadian Infantry
(Western Ontario Regiment). He is
buried at Ontario Cemetery, Sains-Les-
Marquion, Northern France. He was
19 years old.
Pte. Bernard Brown - was born July
2, 1896 in Scotland and died on
September 12, 1918 at Cambrai,
France. His stated next-of-kin was his
brother, Edward Brown of Ripley,
Ontario. He was a farmer by trade.
Pte. Brown enlisted January 1, 1916 at
Seaforth, Ontario with the D -Company
of the 161st Huron Battalion. Later he
became a part of the 58th Battalion of
the Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario
Regiment). He is buried at Sun Quarry
Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. ` He
wa 22 years old.
Pte. John E. Idon Bullard - was born
on April 11, 1899 in Winthrop, Ontario
and died on October 24, 1918. He was
the son of John F. and Margaret
Bullard, of Seaforth, Huron county9on
Col., Ontario and was a blacksmith by
trade. He was commissioned on
February 29, 1916 at Seaforth, Ontario
with the D -Company of the 161st
Huron Battalion. Later he joined the
43rd Battalion of the Canadian Infantry
(Manitoba Regiment). He died of
wounds received at the Battle of
Cambrai and is buried at Etaples
Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais
France. He was 19 years old.
Pte. Alexander Douglas Macdonald
Calder - was born on June 24, 1888 at
Seaforth Ontario and died on April 9,
1917. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Andrew Calder and was the husband of
Gertrude R. Brodie (formerly Calder)
of Redwood City, California, USA. He
enlisted on March 16, 1916 at Toronto,
Ontario with a Highland Battalion and
later joined the 15th Battalion of the
Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario
Regiment). Pte. Calder wrote his wife
and young daughter three days before
he was killed. He had a premonition of
his death and told his wife to get his
affairs in order so she and their child
would be looked after. He was formerly
employed as a plumber at Union Stock
Yards in Toronto. Pte. Calder is buried
at Nine Elms Military Cemetery, Pas
de Calais, France. He was 28 years
old.
Pte. Herbert Trewartha Chapman
- was born on September 3, 1888 at
Mount Forest, Ontario and died on
October 25, 1916. He was the son of Mr.
and Mrs. William E. Chapman, of
Seaforth; husband of Emma Selena
Chapman, of Seaforth, Ontario
(Moorefield, Ontario - according to
Attestation papers). He was a tinsmith
by trade. He was commissioned on
Sept. 13, 1915 at Camp Hughes,
Manitoba. He joined the 44th Battalion
of the Canadian Infantry (Manitoba
Regiment). He was missing and pre-
sumed dead and his name is located on
the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais,
France. He was 27 years old.
Lt. Francis Nicholas Cluff - was
born on November 17, 1893 in Seaforth,
Ontario. Pte. Cluff was the son of Noble
and Margaret Knechtel Cluff, of
Seaforth, Ontario. He had pre -World
War 1 duty with the 33rd Huron
Battalion from 1915-1916, and was
commissioned December 21, 1915 in
Seaforth with the D -Company of the
161st Huron Battalion, Canadian
Expeditionary Force. He was a student
studying Dentistry at the Royal College
of Dental Surgeons. Lt. Cluff went
overseas in November and he reached
France in May, 1918, joining the 49th
Battalion of the Canadian Infantry
(Albert Regiment). While serving in
France with the 49th, he was killed in
action on August 26, 1918 by a machine
gun bullet when his battalion took part
in an attack at Pelves, east of Arras. He
is buried at Gourock Trench Cemetery,
Tilloy-les-Mofflaines, Pas -de -Calais,
France. Pte. Cluff was 24 years old.
Pte. Rollo Elmer Cook - was born on
November 3, 1891 in Michigan, USA
and died on September 29, 1918. His
mother, Mrs. Jane Cook, was listed as
the next of kin on his Attestation
papers. He was a farmer by trade and
was commissioned on January 14,
1916 at Seaforth, Ontario with
D -Company of the 161st Huron
Battalion. Pte. Cook later joined the
58th Battalion of the Canadian Infantry
(Central Ontario Regiment). He is bur-
ied at Anneux British Cemetery,
Northern France, He was 26 years
old.
Pte. Edward Cecil Dilling - was
born January 1, 1893 at Seaforth,
Ontario and died on August 23; 1918.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel
Dilling, of Kippen, Ontario. He was a
farmer by trade and joined the war on
January 24, 1916 at Seaforth with
D -Company of the 161st Huron
Battalion. He later joined the 47th
Battalion of the Canadian Infantry
(Western Ontario Regiment) and was
buried at Boves West Communal
Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
He was 25 years old.
Pte. Samuel Hays Dorrance - was
born on November 7, 1887 in McKillop
Twp., Huron County, Ontario, and died
on September 6, 1918. He was the son
of Mr. and Mrs. S. Dorrance, of Seaforth
and was the husband of Mrs. Mae
Dorrance, of Seaforth, Ontario. Pte
Dorrance enlisted on May 8, 1916 at
Seaforth, Ontario with D -Company of
the 161st Huron Battalion and was a
chauffeur by trade. He later joined the
2nd Battalion of the Canadian Machine
Gun Corps. He is buried at Faubourg-d'
Amiens Cemetery, Pas de Calais,
France. He was 30 years old.
Edgar, Pte. Thomas Edgar - was
born on December 4, 1895 in
Cumberland, England and died on
January 11, 1916. He was the son of
Robert and Martha Edgar, of Seaforth,
Ontario and was an iron worker by
trade. He enlisted on the Niagara
Campus on May 31, 1915. Pte. Edgar
joined the 15th Battalion with the
Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario
Regiment). He is buried at La Plus
Douve Farm Cemetery, Belgium. He
was 20 years old.
Lieu. Clarence Scott Garden - died
on June 2, 1918. He was the son of
George Frederick Scott Garden and
Clarissa• Hays Garden of Toronto,
Ontario. He joined the No. 4 Training
Deport Station with the Royal Air
