The current playground, installed in 1992, is now deemed unsafe and after a revitalization of. sorts of ball in Cromarty thanks to the ef- forts of Rob and Steve Dearing, a new initiative to improve the .play- ground for next year is underway. The .playground, it is hoped, will be moved further south than its cur- rent location away from an exist- ' ing hydro pole and be completely fenced -in. The Dearings made a proposal to council at their meeting last Mon- day, Oct. 26, and asked for finan- cial support from the municipality as well as their assistance in apply- ing for Trillium funding. The South Hibbert Athletic Association, which has seen its membership dwindle, has pledged $5,000 for the project, and will co-ordinate in-kind volun- teers in the amount of $1,200 and other support to make the project a reality. The group will ask Trillium for a $35,000 grant, with $15,500 re- quested from the municipality. The South Hibbert Athletic Asso- ciation, which was formed in 1970, has looked 'after the ball park in the village. Cromarty's current ball park was officially opened Aug. 1, 1970. The South Hibbert Athletic Association built the diamond after buying 3.75 acres of land. In 1980, fences were built down the first and third base lines ` and around the players' benches. In 1990, new bleachers and a home run fence were added. 00:4;V:S. Dan Schwab photo ' The Seaforth Stars' Midget Girls' hockey team outplayed South Huron on Oct. 30, winning 4-2 at home. "You've done an excellent job re- vitalizing that park," said Coun. Walter McKenzie, to the Dearings. "Cromarty seems on the upswing again. I think we can support it." . Other users of the park itself, such as family picnics and barbeques, will also benefit from a new play- ground, he said. Coun. Barb MacLean echoed McK- enzie's comments, saying "we have the kids there to support it." "We have to support our rural parks," said Coun. Ross McIntosh. The group suggested that other grant initiatives were also being investigated. Deputy Mayor Gerry Kehl, who said he supports the project but wants to ensure they support it as fair as they have others, such as Dublin and Brodhagen, wants to make it clear that the municipality will not exceed the $15,500 contri- bution if grants are, not successful for whatever reason.
