ER not seeing appreciable change in volume
since overnight closure, administrator says

"You can't tell," Cardinal said. "With a swab,
you're not going to get the results right away,
so really, they'll look at what the symptoms are
and if a person has an underlying health con-
dition. But for 90 per cent of the people, they
need to be home and rest, drink fluids. But
if their cough worsens and their fever wors-
ens, then they need to get help or be assessed
quickly."
Cardinal also said although the hospital's
emergency room has "not seen an ap-
preciable change in volume" since it
cut back its hours from 24 to 12 back
Huron farmers
faced difficult
year in '09
Dan Schwab
Wayne Black, president of the Hu-
ron Federation of Agriculture, ad-
dressed members of the organization
at their annual meeting in Seaforth
on Oct. 22, saying the past year has
been "troublesome" for farmers, par-
ticularly for those in the pork indus-
try.
"Everybody knows the beef and
pork situation," he said. "It's being
felt in the countryside and we all feel
for pork producers."
Black also mentioned farmers have
faced criticism over the past year af-
ter water quality issues were linked
to agricultural waste runoff.

"Recruitment continues (for nurses) and
there has been no change in the services we've
been providing since we adjusted hours," she
said. "The emergency department in general is
seeing fewer patients, but I think part of that
is a reflection of the family health team and its
resources."
Cardinal added that even when the ER was
open 24 hours, volumes through the late eve-
ning and overnight were traditionally "very
low."
