Unlikely Seaforth will see long lineups for
H1N1 vaccine, hospital administrator says

Seaforth Community Hospital ad-
ministrator Mary Cardinal says it's
unlikely Seaforth will be faced with the
long lineups other cities across Ontario
have been experiencing with people
lining up to receive the H1N1 flu shot
as it's given out later this week.
As larger centres such as London,
Kitchener and Kingston saw prior-
ity persons, such as pregnant women,
young children and healthcare workers,
waiting significant
lengths of time to
get vaccinated last
week, Cardinal
says she doesn't
expect people will
have to wait too
long when the first
public H1N1 flu
shot clinic is held.

months to five years and people under

be held at the Huron Community Fam-
ily Health Team offices in the Huron
East Health Centre today (Nov 4) from
noon to 7 p.m.
A second clinic will take place for high
risk priority patients at• the Seaforth
Community Centres Nov 7, from 10
a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
"I don't think we'll have the same line-
ups because we don't have the same
volumes. But people might well have to
wait an hour or two," she said, during a
meeting of the Huron East Healthcare
Partners Committee on Oct. 28.
Cardinal said that last week, part of
the reason behind the long lineups at
clinics was that not all of the vaccines
had been released yet.
"The first allotment that was released
came in shipments of 500 that could
not be divided up,"

she said. "So, it
was really up to
public health to
distribute those ...
As they get more
vaccine distribu-
tors, as the prov-
ince gets more
distributed, then
it will be available
in doctors' office
and it will be more
available."
Andrew Wil-
liams, the Huron -
Perth Healthcare
Alliance chair, said during the meeting
that the H1N1-related death last week
of Etobicoke's Evan Frustaglio, 13,
caused people to rush to flu clinics to
be immunized against the H1N1 virus,
contributing to the long lineups nation-
wide.
Cardinal added that although it's a
personal choice whether or not a mem-
ber of the public gets the shot, she
strongly suggests every person get it.
"There is a lot of fear out there," Wil-
liams said. "That's why it's so impor-
tant to do the basics —. washing your
hands, coughing into your elbow, stay
home when you're sick. Use common
sense."
For now, Cardinal says people with
concerns about the H1N1 virus are
being directed to the Huron County
Health Unit website at www.huron-
county.ca/health/ or to call Telehealth
Ontario at 1-866-797-0000.
"We will be the spokesperson for our
internal operations but in terms of giv-
ing the public direction, Public Health
is really the spokesperson for that,"
Cardinal said. "There really should be
one source of information. The infor-
mation around this has been modified
on a regular basis because this is a new
strain. People are -confused."
During last week's meeting, Hu-.
ron East Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan asked Cardinal how a doc-
tor could determine if someone has the
virus without taking a sample.
