scho o l board representative says
From Page 1
It also states that schools will
not be informed of site-specific
cases of H1N1 by the board or
by the Health Unit since'test-
ing to confirm which strain of
flu is.making someone ill is not
being done except in the more
rare serious cases."
However, the letter does say
that if there is "a report of a
case or cluster of influenza-
like illness requires additional
public health action other than
what has already been com-
municated, the health units
will inform the school board,
provide materials to us (school
board) and we would commu-
nicate this immediately to .all
parents, schools and staff."
Howe says some parents' anx-
iety levels were increased after
last week's news of the H1N1-

related death of 13 -year-old
Evan Frustaglio, from Etobi-
coke.
"It sent shockwaves. through
the district and now we're try-
ing to calm the fears of parents,"
he says. "Keeping healthy kids
at home doesn't serve any pur-
pose because unless they're at
home 100 per cent of the time,
there is no shortage of where it
could be transmitted. It's not
just in schools, it's a commu-
nity virus."

Howe adds that if parents see
their children have any signs of
flu symptoms, they should keep
them at home.
The Avon Maitland School
Board ordered hand sanitizers
for schools across the district
that should be arriving soon.
Howe says teachers should re-
inforce to their students the im-
portance of hand washing and
coughing into their sleeves to
prevent the spread of germs.
Howe says schools are also be-
ing encouraged to wash down
door knobs and bathroom towel
dispensers and keep hand sani-
tizers in computer labs.
He says there will not be mass
inoculations for the H1N1 virus
at schools and parents should
check the Huron County Health
Unit website for times and loca-
tions posted about community
vaccination clinics.
