The stone facing on the four columns flanking the porch is repeated along the front of the house, adding to the street appeal. Once inside the foyer, there's a view to the great room at the heart of the house, and beyond to the sundeck. The great room's nine -foot vaulted ceilings add to its spacious feeling. A built-in entertainment unit and a gas fireplace occupy one wall, while a half -wall separ- ates the great room from stairs to the unfinished base- ment. One entire wall of windows overlooks the rear sundeck — a sure guarantee that this multi-purpose living space will be full of natural light. A combined eating bar and work island divides the kitchen from the great room, providing plenty of room for casual entertaining. An extra -wide window sill over the double sink will make a great place to grow culin- ary herbs, and a large corner pantry provides always - welcome storage. Open to the kitchen, the dining area includes an optional built-in buffet, which will provide extra serving and storage space. The new organization will be called the United Way of Perth -Huron and its territory will encompass all of Perth and Huron counties. Huron board members voted Wednesday morning at their annual general meeting in Goderich to dis- solve the Huron agency. The creation of the new Perth -Hu- ron agency and its name and terri- tory came in unanimous votes at a special follow-up meeting described as historic in Stratford. "It's a big day for two counties," said Perth board president Shelley Groenestege. Key questions about fundraising and the organization's name were addressed at the Stratford meeting. Current campaigns underway in both counties will continue. In the future, each county will have its own campaign and individual allocations panels to decide how to distribute the money to their affiliated commu- nity agencies. Ensuring that money raised in a community stays in• the community is one of the principles of the United Way. "We're keeping separate bank ac- counts. We're keeping separate data- bases," said Ellen Balmain, Perth's executive director who will take over the same capacity in the newly - merged agency. "We will be really clear on from where the money came and to where it's going." The name Avon Maitland was con- sidered for the merger but was re- jected for financial and practical rea- sons. It was felt that changing the name could result in confusion and lost donations along with more red tape to dissolve each group's charitable status and create a new charitable organization, Balmain said. "That seemed to be the smart thing to do and it wasn't an ego problem," said Wayne Smith, a board member in Huron. The merger came after months of quiet negotiations after the Huron board approached the Perth United Way in June. A committee made up of board members from both agencies met every other week over the ensuing months to work out details. The pro- cess was described as amicable. "We were not made to feel like we were the poor cousins even though we were," said Jerry McDonnell, president of the Huron board. The Huron agency was in trouble after its 2007 and 2008 campaigns fell short of its goals and its execu- tive director resigned in February. There wasn't enough money to hire a replacement. Administrative costs in Huron were running over the 20 per cent guideline set out for Canadian chari- ties, Balmain said. As a means of saving money, she said, the Huron office will be phased out and organizations in the county will be approached about donating space for a United Way resource of- fice next year. Important donors in both counties were consulted about the merger, Groenestege said. Sifto Canada in Goderich, the larg- est donor to the Huron campaign, told the Huron agency it was a smart move, Balmain said. Staffing won't change in the imme- diate future. The five people working in Stratford will look after needs in both counties. Applications have been made for government funding to add a con- tract position in Huron, Balmain said. Guest speaker Al Hatton, presider.* and CEO of the United Way of Can- ada, said the Perth -Huron merger will serve as a model for the national organization, which has a number of struggling agencies. "This process, your two counties, your two boards and both staffs have worked through is actually at the heart of a new way of look- ing how to serve more people, cre- ate greater im- pact and raise more resources," he said. He offered an encouraging look at the economy, saying United Ways across Can- ada are "cautious- ly optimistic" that they'll sur- pass last year's total of $483 mil- lion which fell $500,000 short of the previous year's total de- spite the reces- sion. The Perth campaign is at 30 per cent of its goal of $801,067. The Huron campaign, which started later, is at 15 per cent of its goal of $207,000.
