News Brussels Legion band receives $15,000 donation Suaan Hundertmark The Brussels Legion Pipes and Drums received a $15,000 donation from the Trillium Foundation to help update. some of the band uniforms. "Some of this clothing has been in use since 1952 and it's just worn out. Every member got some arti- cle of clothing," says Brian Schlosser, a band mem- ber who applied for the grant. Schlosser says that because the uniforms include such specialized equipment, it would take $5,000 to completely outfit one band member from top to bot- tom. "There's no way we could have dressed everyone with $15,000 but this grant revitalizes what we have," he says. The pipers in the band own their own bagpipes but the drums and uniforms belong to the band and are loaned to each member. The uniforms in- clude kilts, doublets, glengarrys, sporans, hosetops, cross belts, waist belts and plaids, which have been passed from member to member for many years. "We have to take good care of our uniforms and everybody does," says Schlosser. There are 15 members in the Brussels Legion Pipes and Drums from age '18-86. They march in 50 parades a year through all kinds of weather. Schlosser says receiving the grant and replacing old equipment was very exciting for the members. "We started receiving things in early July and it was like opening gifts on Christmas morning when the boxes were opened," he says. Susan Hundertmark photo Members of the Brussels Legion Pipes and Drums, includ- ing Bessie Johnston, Don Martin, Brian Schlosser and Evelyn Stroop, show off their updated uniforms as Huron - Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell, Trillium Foundation chair Kathy Pletsch and Huron East Mayor Joe Selll present them with a $15,000 grant. Brussels 'Legion president Joanne Mc- Donald o-Donald also celebrates the grant with the group. r4 •
