Cubs Care youth
group preparing for
`Halloween for
Hunger' campaign
Dan gcbwab
This Halloween, if a trick -or -treater comes to your door
asking for a canned good instead of candy, it's not meant
to be a trick.
About 30 members of the Cubs Care youth group from
Seaforth Public School will be traveling through local
neighbourhoods collecting canned goods for the Seaforth
and Area Food Bank as part of the second annual Hallow-
een for Hunger campaign.
The group came up with the idea for the initiative last
year after attending a conference organized by Free the
Children, the world's largest network of children helping
children through education.
Eleven members of the Cubs Care group attended the
annual conference in Toronto again this year and came
back hoping to reprise the Halloween campaign for an-
other year.
"They had a great reaction to the conference,". says Jenn
Pilat, a Grade 3 teacher at SPS and co -leader of the Cubs
Care group. "They realized that they are the agents of
change. They can make those little differences in their
community."
Pilat says students won't be discouraged to ask for can-
dy, while attempting to collect canned goods,
"They can still get candy, but we'd like them to have a
good balance," she says.
Last year, the Halloween for Hunger campaign collected
321 canned goods for the Seaforth and Area Food Bank.
At the time, food bank chair Maureen Spittal said
the collected canned goods helped refill the food bank's
shelves, which were almost bare after Thanksgiving.
The students will transport any canned goods they col-
lect to the food bank on Nov 2, Pilat says.
