News Barbershop quartet `The Sting' wins provincial competition Susan Hundertmark After taking a few years off, Seaforth's Dave Campbell is back to crooning some tunes with a barbershop quartet - and has recently become an Ontario champion for the third time. "We had no expectations going in but I had a good feel- ing we were singing pretty well. It felt really good," says Campbell of his quartet, The Sting, and their performance at an Oct. 17 competition in Brantford. The Sting was formed two weeks before the Seaforth Harmony Kings' annual performance at the Seaforth Pub- lic School on Oct. 3. The group is made up of Campbell, Rob Vanbuskirk, who sang with Campbell in three different groups, Mike Melton, who's been singing barbershop for years and Glen Bowker, originally from Clinton whose father used to sing with the Harmony Kings. The Sting came first out of 10 quartets with an average score of 75.5 at the provincial competition. The quartet plans to enter a natioi ial competition in Col- lingwood in April, where they would have to score 76 or higher to earn the right to compete in an international barbershop singing contest in Philadelphia in July. "With a 75.5 in Ontario, we're very close and I would like to sing in Philadelphia in July," says Campbell, who has sung at an international level from 2004 to 2006. A quartet from the Seaforth Harmony Kings called Mid- night Express also competed in the provincial contest, coming 19th out of 22 quartets. Dave Campbell, John Elligsen, Steve Herold and Alan Eidt make up the Midnight Express. • Campbell says that because each singer can only com- pete in one quartet in the national competition, he'll be singing with The Sting but he's encouraged Midnight Ex- press to enter with someone to replace him. "For the bass and lead, it was the first time they ever competed in a provincial contest. We were going over the video and what the judges said to be able to improve," says Campbell. "Both groups will continue," he says. gillppyw NM npgk • No Drip Undercoating • Snow Tires and Tire Sales 1Pek Salo Somok 104444•1404 Call for an Appointment
