To the Editor,.
For many years the people of Sea -
forth and area have been most gen-
erous in contributing to the annual
poppy campaign of Branch 156 of the
Royal Canadian Legion.
Funds which the public contrib-
ute are held in trust in a separate
account and do not form any part
of branch finances. The amount col-

Cyclist Bill Parker says he was
determined to `Whoop Canada'
From Page 1
"I was determined to whoop Canada,"
he said with a laugh. "But now, I don't
know who's whooping who."
Parker admits it hasn't been easy.
He's pedaled through hard rain and
snow, over bumpy terrain and through
heavy traffic.
Still, he recounts stories of his jour-
ney with a wide grin.
"I must've had at least 100 accidents,"
he says, adding that he occasionally
needs to replace the bike's chain or rim
after a wipeout.
He arrived in Seaforth Oct. 19 after
leaving Lucan earlier that morning. He
says he travels between 40-70 miles per
day, at an average speed of six miles
per hour.
He often visits
churches or food
banks formeals to
keep him going.
When it comes
to sleeping for the
night, Parker nev-
er really knows
where he'll lay his
head.
"I've stayed at
farms, machine
shops, camping
parks, motels..."
he says.
At one place in
Quebec, Parker
shared a house
with some very
dangerous room-
mates.
"This guy kept
100 tarantulas in
his living room,"
Parker says. "I've
stayed in all kinds
of places."
After travelling
thousands of kilometres across Canada
and back, Parker says he's learned a
few things about Canadians.
"People are pretty welcoming," he
says. "Canadians are friendly. And we
really like rooster yard ornaments."
On his travels, Parker says he's run
into fellow travellers who've given him
some motivation to keep going.
He met a family of four, which includ-
ed a 12 -year-old girl, who was bicycling
from Vancouver to Nova Scotia.
He also met a man walking from New
York to Vancouver in a fundraising
campaign for crippled children.
Parker says he doesn't get homesick
and regularly phones his parents to let
them know he's OK.
"My dad thinks I'm crazy," he says,
chuckling.
