vaccines
given out
this week
Susan Hundertmark
H1N1 vaccines are being
given to Huron County's vul-
nerable population this week
but there will be plenty of vac-
cine to go around for everyone
else in the next three weeks,
says Christina Taylor, Public
Health Manager of the Huron
County Health Unit.
"The main message is, `Don't
panic,'" she says. "It's the
flu and if you have someone
at home sick, you should do
what you would normally do
and know what the signs are
if you should take someone to
the hospital."
"H1N1 has been here since
April, we knew it was coming
and we're ready," Taylor says.
Taylor says the absentee
rates at the schools across
Huron County are higher
than they were four weeks
ago when the health unit be-
gan a surveillance system at
the schools.
But, she says only three Hu-
ron County schools have an
absentee rate as high as

Parker started a bicycling trip March 16 and has been on the road ever since.

stops in town
during
Canada -wide
adventure
Dan Schwab
One afternoon last week, Bill Parker
stopped at the visitor's booth on Main
Street to take a short rest on a park
bench.
He was just passing through town,
but Parker's mode of transportation
garnered more than a few curious looks
from passersby.
It was a 21 -speed Trek bike, loaded
down with 200 pounds of gear, from a
sleeping bag and ground tarp to a small
TV and DVD player.
Parker, a slim 47 -year-old, has cycled
from his hometown of Edmonton, Alta,
all the way east to Nova Scotia and is
now on his way to Manitoba, where he
plans to store his bike with relatives
in Winnipeg and hitchhike back to his
home in the west.
He started his voyage on March 16
and expects'to be in Winnipeg in about
four weeks.
Parker says he's been an avid cyclist
since he was a youngster and he want-
ed to make the cross -Canada trip for an
adventure.
