Ever since Tabitha Simonsen and
Tracey Schelken lost their mother to
cancer in 2006, the sisters have been
organizing family-oriented events to
raise money for the Canadian Can-
cer Society's annual Relay for Life.
Although the next Relay for Life
isn't happening until June 2010, the
sisters are already planning fund-
raisers with the hope of collecting
more than they did last year.
"We're 'hoping to beat $5,400," Si-
monsen: says, noting that her Relay
for Life team, the Disney Mates,
reached that figure this past June
with the help of about 10 team mem-
bers collecting pledges.
On Nov. 14, the team is hosting
a curling bonspiel at the Seaforth
Curling Club, starting at 8:30 a.m.
So far, Simonsen says only about
four or five teams have signed up,
but she's hoping to have 12 teams
playing that day.
Registration costs are $100 per
team and four players are allowed
on each squad. All ages are welcome
to attend.
Simonsen says the team has been
trying to think of unique fundraising
ideas and hope to continue to host
events up until June.
"We were looking for a different
way to do fundraising," Simonsen
says, adding that her son Jordan, 12,
is an avid curler.
"Experience is not necessary. It's
for fun and to raise money for a good
cause. It's not a competitive day,"
Schelken says.
Although it's not meant to be a
competition, Simonsen says that af-
ter the event, prizes will be awarded,
including backpacks, t -shirts, hats
and more.
Any players who sign up are also
encouraged to raise money through
pledges for next year's Relay for
Life.
The annual Relay for Life is a 12 -
hour overnight event that is cel-
ebrated across Canada by those
who've lost a loved one to cancer or
know someone struggling with the
disease.
All proceeds go towards research
for a cure and to assist those living
with cancer.
