Scouting registration more than doubled from 2008
do
Seaforth's Scouting movement,
which was down to a Cub pack of
six children last year, has more
than doubled this year with 15
children and adults leading Bea-
vers, Cubs and Scouts.
"I like to think . of it as a renais-
sance," says Cub leader Derek
Rath.
Rath, along with Krystal Col-
well, kept the Cub pack going in
Seaforth when many of the other
adults involved had stepped down.
Rath, who had been wearing both
hats, managed to recruit a group
commissioner in Alex Beasse and
the two of them then set about re-
cruiting section leaders over the
past six months.
"I'm not going to give up on Scout-
ing in Seaforth - it's the largest
youth organization in the world,
despite the decline in Canada and
it's rebounding right now. The same
thing that's happening in Seaforth
is happening all over," he says.
Rath, who was involved in Scout-
ing as a child for eight years and
then spent 20 years as a leader,
says the movement has a lot to of-
fer youth. •
"Not everyone is into sports and
Scouting offers a badge program
that is based on life skills. You
learn a whole lot of things that
come in handy later on in life. Plus,
it's fun," he says, adding the activi-
ties centre around camping, cook-
ing, canoeing, hiking and games.
Beavers and Scouts are being of-
fered in Seaforth for the first time
in four years.
Beavers, for boys and girls aged
5-7, meet Monday nights from 6:30
to 7:30 p.m. at the Optimist Hall
with leader Yvonne Leis, followed
the same night by Scouts from 7:30
to 9 p.m. with leader Alex McGil-
vrey.
"Beavers are the foundation.
If we can get kids interested in
having some fun with the Bea-
vers, they will stick with it,"
says Rath.
Cubs meet Thursdays from 7
- 8:30 p.m. at St. James School
with leaders Derek Rath and
Krystal Colwell.
An investiture ceremony, in-
cluding a Beaver tail slap, a
Cubs grand howl and a Scouts
flag break, was held at St.
James School last week to wel-
come the new members.
"Now that we have new lead-
ers, I'm sure it will grow," he
says.
Rath says the main fundrais-
er for the group will be pop-
corn sales, which could be sold
door-to-door and kicked off last
Thursday.
Yvonne Leis pins a beaver tail on the hat of
Seth Ashwin as he's invested into the Sea -
forth Beaver colony on Thursday.
