Radiothon to
raise money for
digital x-ray
From Page 1
peeing so it may take a little longer.
But, people have been very gener-
ous," he says..
The foundation has already raised
$213,283 towards a new PACS (Pic-
ture Archiving Communications Sys-
tem), technology that allows diagnos-
tic tests, including nuclear medicine,
CT scans, x-rays and ultrasounds
to be produced with digital images,
which can then be transferred elec-
tronically.
The digital x-ray machine is phase
two of a fundraising project that be-
gan three years ago.
Lavoie says that while the Seaforth
hospital foundation is again aiming
to raise $50,000 at the annual radio-
thon event, money raised from all of
the foundation's year-long campaigns
will also go towards the new digital
x-ray machine until it is paid for.
"It would be nice to do it this year
but we may go into next year before
we're done. These larger initiatives
are major and take some time and
commitment but they keep the hospi-
tal vibrant and up-to-date and serv-
ing the community, which is good
for both patients and staff," says
Lavoie.
While Seaforth patients have been
sent to Clinton Public Hospital for x-
rays over the past few weeks while
Seaforth's new digital x-ray machine
was being installed, Datema says the
transition has gone smoothly and the
medical staff are seeing a big differ-
ence in the quality of the x-rays.
"There's a night and day difference
between the quality of the images
now and those from the old machine;"
hesays. "I was thinking how great
things were with the PACS system
and now they're that much better
with the new x-ray machine."
Datema says the new x-ray machine
provides better clarity and detail,
with fracture lines in broken bones
showing up much more clearly and
areas of fluid or pneumonia showing
up with more detail in lung x-rays.
"It's a big step forward for the hos-
pital. 'This is the kind of technol-
ogy you expect to be trained on as a
resident in a teaching hospital - you
don't expect to see it in a community
hospital," he says.
Lavoie agrees that the new technol-
ogy is a helpful recruitment tool, as
well, for medical staff.
The radiothon will be held again at
the Seaforth Legion, kicking off at 9
a.m. with the Brussels Legion Pipe
Band and continuing until 5 p.m.
with local entertainment including
singers, instrumentalists and danc-
ers. Donations will be accepted all
day at the Legion or over the phone
at 519-357-1310 or toll free at 1-877-
227-3486.
