That was the sentiment expressed by County Warden Ken Oke (South Huron) Oct. 7, during his monthly ad- dress to county council. Oke took time out topay tribute to the grand -opening gala hosted by the Regional Equine and Agriculture Cen- tre of Huron (REACH) in Clinton. "It probably was the best party that Huron County ever had," he said, noting he was somewhat disappointed that the county's $500,000 contribution to the project didn't receive a mention. Other highlights for September included participat- ing in the Ontario Provincial Police's 100th anniversary bash where Oke was the only mayor to join dignitaries on the stage. He said he thought the special invitation came on the heels of Huron County's decision to present the OPP with a plaque of thanks for its work. "We were the only county that recognized the OPP for their dedication," he said. Oke also made note of Varna resident Melissa Spar- ling's recent win as the All Ontario Queen of the Fur- row and noted an open house will be held Oct. 25 at the Stanley Complex in Varna, to congratulate Sparling and county youths Brandon and Jacob McGavin on their stel- lar showings at the International Plowing Match held in Thmiskaming. Exemplary work EMS manager Dave Lew joined county administrators and councillors in giving praise to Tharon Riley in re- ceiving a 20 -year Exemplary service medial on behalf of Governor General Michaelle Jean. Giving thanks More than a dozen county employees were thanked for many years of service in a special presentation at council chambers. Among those being honoured were Dianne Cook, Deb- bie Cuthill, Bonnie Finch, and Cathy Mcllwain, all with 35 years of service in the Homes department "You are the backbone of the county," said Oke. "We have a county that we can be proud of, and one of the reasons is the employees that provide a service." Zorn to the page Tim Waechter, a Grade 7 student at Brussels. Public School, was welcomed into council's fold as the page for September. Tim, who is the grandson of Coun. Joseph Seili (Huron East) and great-grandson of Coun. Max Demaray (How - ick Township) enjoys hockey and soccer. Tim Waechter, the page at the Oct. 7 session of Huron Coun- ty Council, poses with his grandfather Huron East Mayor Joe Setif and his great grandfather Howick Reeve Max Demaray.
