Seaforth hospital's LAC has three -new representatives
Spsan HunA ijark
The Seaforth Community Hospital
Local Advisory ,Committee has three
new members this year.
Angela Kyveris, an optometrist
who .works both in Seaforth with Dr.
Rick Bains and Dr. Devon Sanderson
and in London, says she was inter-
ested in joining the LAC so that she
can give back to the community.
"It's amazing how everyone works
together in a small town," says Kyv-
eris, who's lived in Seaforth for two
and a half years after moving here
from Waterloo.
"I was lucky to be chosen. Because
I'm new, I'm mostly sitting back and
listening but I'm hoping to put my
two cents worth in," she says.
Kerri-Anne O'Rourke, Perth East's
municipal clerk, says joining the
LAC is giving. her an opportunity to
meet new people as she moves. to a
farm north of Dublin from the Strat-
ford area.
"I felt it was time to get into some
volunteering. I have a lot of people
in healthcare in my family and it's
always a topic at -the. dinner table,"
she says, adding that her mother
and sister are nurses.
"Healthcare needs intelligent peo-
ple to get involved so they can under-
stand the challenges. The Alliance
has a really good board and intel-
ligent staff who
are working hard
to solve the prob-
lems at all rural
hospitals," says
O'Rourke.
O'Rourke says
there are .simi-
larities between
working in the
healthcare sys-
tem
ys tem and working
in municipal gov-
ernment.
"We have the
same challenges with funding," she
says.
And, while she says' there's no one
issue she's interested in as an LAC
member, -O'Rourke says she's excited
to become involved with the Huron
Perth Healthcare Alliance.
Tim Cunningham is a registered
respiratory therapist who's been in-
volved in healthcare management in
Sarnia for 25 years before moving to
Seaforth eight•years ago.
Since moving to Seaforth, Cun-
ningham has . been working in men-
tal health care.
"I've always had a passion for
healthcare and excellence in health-
care. It appals me- what's happening
in London - responsibility and ac-
countability are very important in
healthcare," he says, referring to the

pital executive who broke the rules.
Cunningham says he's concerned
about the continuing overnight clo-
sure of the Seaforth emergency de-
partment.
"I really want to see a positive con-
clusion to that . situation as soon as
possible. I worry that the longer it's,
closed, the powers that be might de-
cide to .keep it that way," says Cun-
ningham.
He adds that he joined the LAC's
external relations committee be-
cause it's important to. him that the
Seaforth community has outlets
to become involved in the hospital
board.
"I like to work on raising awareness
that we're here to hear all your ques-
tions and concerns," he says, adding
that he hopes to hear from the public
a lot as the Alliance creates its Vi-
sion 2013 plan.
Councillors saya united stand
necessary during school review

wants to close both of our public
schools and throw them into North
Huron and Perth County. They
pretty much admitted they
don't care about educa-
tion - they want to move
kids to where they have
spaces," said Seili.
"This is the same song
and dance from when
we lost our high school
in Seaforth in 2002," he
said.
Huron East Clerk -Ad-
ministrator pointed out
that along with the high
school, Huron East also
lost two public schools
in Walton and Vanastra
around the same time.
"This is just the tip of
the iceberg because there's
not a big population in Seaforth.
We've got to put up a united stand
here and really support this," added
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler.
Seili said that while some rate-
payers might not think keeping lo-
cal schools is a big issue, especially
when their children have grown up,
they need to remember that 26 per
cent of the tax bill goes to education.
"If education goes out of the com-
munity, the assessment goes down,"
he pointed out.
Stefller asked Seili if he thought
the board had already made their
decision about the fate of the Huron
East schools.
Seili responded that Huron East
will have to prove why
they want to keep their
schools.
"Maybe the two
schools can be com-
bined and a new
school can be built in
Huron East. We need
to start phoning and
writing to our MPP
and to the Education
Minister. This is go-
ing to be tough," said
Seili, adding that he's
recommended to both
communities in Brus-
sels and Ethel that
they work together.
Avon Maitland District School Board
communications director Steve
Howe said in a phone interview that
a school's value to the community
and its potential loss will be weighed
against the benefits of closure or con-
solidation.
"Every possible option will be
looked at and discussed. It's a diffi-
cult situation for trustees but it all
boils down to what's best for students
and learning," he said.
