Seili sounds
warning about
possible loss of
local schools
Susan Hupdertmark
Huron East could lose both .of its
public schools in the northern half
of the municipality, Mayor Joe Seili
warned at the Oct. 6 Huron East
council meeting.
Asking for a councillor to take up
the fight for the municipality when
the first accommodation review com-
mittee meeting is held Oct. 22, Seili
warned that losing two public schools
"will kill economic development in
the north."
"We all know that when people
come into the area,.they ask for edu-
cation and health care," he said.
Stili said that even though Brus-
sels Public School is at 99 per cent
capacity, the Avon Maitland District
School Board is recommending dos-
ing it and moving the students to a
new "megaschool" in North Huron.
He said the argument the board
is making is that Brussels' school,
which was built in the 1960s, will be
too costly to maintain.
He added that Grey Central Public
Schools which has declining enrol-
ment, is being recommended for clo-
sure with the students being moved
to Elma Township Public School in
Newry.
Seili complained that the school
board has not taken into consider-
ation
onsideration the fact that the province is
putting Early Childhood Education
spaces into public schools.
The school board passed a motion
Sept. 8 establishing an accommo-
dation review for Brussels Public
School, Grey Central Public School,
Wallace Public School, Listowel East -
dale Public School, Listowel Central
Public School and Elma Township
Public School.
Seili said the municipality is being
allowed to send one representative
to sit on the accommodation review
committee, which will provide advice
to the board on the possible chang-
es to the way the schools are orga-
nized.
"Basically, the Avon Maitland board
