Brandon and Jacob McGavin big winners at this year's IPM
Two McGavin cousins - Brandon,
17 and Jacob, 14, - were the big
winners from Huron County during
the International Plowing Match . in
Temiskaming from Sept. 22-26, fin-
ishing
n-
' g first in their respective divi-
sions.
More than 80 people from the area
supported and celebrated the ac-
complishments of the 14 area plow
persons who took part in this year's
IPM. .
Brandon, current Canadian Junior
Tractor Plowing Champion since
June, earned the opportunity to com-
pete once again in the Canadians
next August in New Brunswick.
The son of Brian and Shelley Mc-
Gavin, of RR 4 Walton, Brandon won
a $2,500 scholarship to be used to:-

wards his education at a university,
college of apprenticeship.
He was also awarded $300 with the
Gordon Bradfield Memorial Special
for topping his class 2, group 2.
As well, he received the Norwell
Dairy Systems monetary award, coat
and hat.
Jacob was awarded the Sidney
Sister Memorial Trophy for having
the highest points total from the ac-
cumulative competition across both
age. divisions.
The. son of Jeff -and Shannon Mc -
Gavin is the new Ontario Junior
Tractor Plowing Champion and win-
ner of the Elliot Moses Memorial
Special as well.
Jacob placed .first on each of the
four days he was required to plow
in class 2, group 1. By placing first
in his group he was awarded the
MGM Townsend Tire $300 prize and
a plaque. He was coached by his fa-
ther.
Brandon placed first in Saturday's
4-H competition and Jacob, who com-
peted without a coach that day, came
in fourth.
Varna's Melissa . Sparling, 21, was
crowned the new Ontario Queen of
the Furrow for 2009/2010.
The daughter of Jim and Tammy
Sparling of R.R. 1, Varna, Melissa is
the third of Huron County's Ontario
queens.

The second was Lynne (Dodds)
Godkin, also formerly of the Seaforth
area and who now resides near Ex-
eter. She was crowned 1984/85 On-
tario Queen in Wellington County.
Melissa is now the ambassador for
the Ontario Plowmen's Association's
(OPA) for the next year and will at-
tend countless promotional events
for the 2010 Elgin County .IPM.
