Grade 3s falling behind as
EQAO results come in
Laura Cudworth
Grade 3 students in the public
board are struggling in reading
and writing.
EQAO test results show a drop in
achievement in reading over last
year -- 58 per cent were successful
in reading in 2008 compared to 52
per cent who took the test in June.
The provincial average is 61 per
cent.
"It was a surprise for us," said
John Herbert, assessment and
evaluation co-ordinator.
"The board moved forward imple-
menting new strategies focused
on writing and reading. We still
feel confident in that approach
but didn't expect the change in re-
sults."
The board is waiting for more
specific data that will detail how
each student did, how close some
kids came to achieving success and
to more accurately identify the ar-
eas of weakness.
In writing, Grade 3 students are
trailing the provincial average by
10 percentage points at 58 per cent
compared to 68 per cent.
The results are significantly bet-
ter in math where students are
just one percentage point behind
the provincial average of 70.
Grade 6 students are behind the
provincial average in every subject
but the gap is smaller.
In reading, 67 per cent compared
to 69, in writing 62 per cent com-
pared to 67 and in math 61 per
cent compared to 63 per cent were
successful on the test.
By the time public school stu-
dents reach Grade 9 their math
scores are dramatically higher and
exceed the provincial average.
In academic math, 82 per cent
had favourable results compared
to 77 per cent in the province and
in applied math 51 per cent coni -
pared to the provincial average of
38 per cent.
Herbert noted students in the
Avon Maitland District School
Board have been showing improve-
ment as they continue through the
system.
"Why they start out below the
province is a real head scratcher.
Teachers are using the best strat-
egies and the kids are working
hard," Herbert said.
The board had planned to incor-
porate more "reading strategies"
into professional development days
with teachers this year.
Meanwhile, students in the Hu-
ron -Perth Catholic District School
Board are doing better than the
provincial average at both the pri-
mary and junior levels.
At the primary level, students
were 10 percentage points above
the provincial average in reading
at 71 per cent and six percentage
points higher in writing at 74.
In math, 79
per cent scored
