St. Anne's athletes are running
`further than ever', coach says
Susan Hundertmark
With the team motto, "the extra mile is nev-
er crowded," the St. Anne's Secondary School
cross country team is working hard this year
to put in a lot of extra miles, says coach Baird
Robinson.
"It's all about putting in the work and trying
to keep healthy. We're running further than
ever and that's paying dividends. Cross coun-
try runner are made, not -born," he says.
Robinson says that with 53 athletes, the St.
Anne's team is bigger than ever - last year's
team had 48 runners - and includes fewer ath-
letes who are trying to compete in more than
one sport.
"We have hardly any kids playing more than
one sport and the attendance at practices is
much higher that way. There's a level of dedi-
cation," he says, adding that he even had 26
runners out to practice on a recent cold and
rainy day.
Robinson says the St. Anne's cross country
team has been doing well at the two invita-
tional meets they've competed.in so far in the
London area.

seventh place for the boys and Shannen Mur-
ray in sixth place for the girls.
As well, the senior girls came seventh over-
all, led by Grace Hartman in sixth and the
junior boys came eighth overall, led by Tyson
Van Osch in 21st. The junior runners were ab-
sent from the Fanshawe meet.
At the Springbank invitational meet on Oct.
1, the senior boys came first, led by Jordan Ka-
dleck in fourth.
The junior girls came second, led by Shannen
Murray in third.
Both the midget girls and midget boys came
third, led by Lexi Poelman in 21st for the girls
and Jason Huber in fourth for the boys.
Robinson says the invitational meets give the
runners an idea of the competition at WOS-
SAA, where he says is the strongest level of
competition in the province.
"If we can get to the provincial level, we
can do Well," he says. "I think we have a good
chance of winning overall for the intermedi-
ate and senior girls and I'd be surprised if we
didn't win with the senior boys."
The Huron -Perth cross country meet will be
held on Oct. 22 at the Morrison Dam Conserva-
tion Area outside of Exeter and WOSSAA will
be held Oct. 29 at the Springwater Conserva-
tion Area near Aylmer.
