Seaforth Public School has one of
the ugliest schoolyards around. -
That's why the school has recently
received a $2,000 grant from the Hu-
ron County Health Unit to buy shade
trees for the playground.

members of the the school's recently -

ing shovels and rakes to help plant

in .three groupings so that they will
provide shade faster for students.
"We were originally going to plant
them along the, border of the school-
yard but the health unit wanted
shade to develop quickly. They -also
wanted us to• plant much more ma-
ture trees than the seedlings we first
thought of planting," says principal
Cheryl Peach.
-Each school out of the eight coun-
ties in the Ugliest Schoolyard project
was asked to provide a photograph
and drawing of the present state of
the schoolyard, a photography and
drawing of the school's proposed
plan and letters of support from the
principal, teachers and parents and
the school board.
"Many school grounds are tarmac
and cut turf. This is the place where
children spend the equivalent of 250
days on school grounds during their
elementary years," says a press re-
lease about the grant program. "What
does your schoolyard need? What ac-
tivities happen in your school yard?
Look for patterns. Who are your pas-
sive players, active players, -
creatives, wanderers? Where are
your senior students? Where is the
shade at 10, 12 and 2 p.m.?"
The program aims to provide more
shade to prevent skin cancer.
