"Many school grounds are tarmac and cut turf. This is the place where children spend the equivalent of 250 days on school grounds during their elementary years," says a press re- lease about the grant program. "What does your schoolyard need? What ac- tivities happen in your school yard? Look for patterns. Who are your pas- sive players, active players, - creatives, wanderers? Where are your senior students? Where is the shade at 10, 12 and 2 p.m.?" The program aims to provide more shade to prevent skin cancer.
