Alliance mental health programs moving Into Seaforth's
medical centre, filling former clinic with a dozen staff
Susan Itundertmark
More than a dozen staff from the
Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance's
mental health programs will soon be
filling half of the Seaforth medical
centre.
Ron Lavoie, a member of the Sea -
forth Community Hospital Trust
and manager of the medical centre
building, says minor renovations
will need to be done to the north side
of the building, which used to. house
Seaforth's family physicians, before
the mental health programs move
in.
"We've been working with the hos-
pital on how to best support the hos-
pital and meet the objectives of the
trust," says Lavoie of the search for
new tenants of the building, which is
owned and maintained by the hospi-
tal trust.
"We'd like to see the building full to
benefit the hospital," he adds.
Four family doctors, including Dr.
Jason Datema, Dr. Dan Eickmeier,
Dr. Heather Percival and Dr. Dan
Rooyakkers moved their practices to
the new Huron East Health Centre
from the Seaforth Medical Centre on
July 1, along with the Gamma Dyna -
care laboratory.
The south side of the building used
to house the Irwin Physiotherapy
office, which moved onto Seaforth's
Main Street.
Dr. Rick Bain's opthamology office
and the elementary teachers' federa-
tion remained in the medical centre
building.
Penny Cardno, program director
for the Alliance's mental health ser-
vices, says the move from current
offices in Clinton, will provide more
space and closer connections to other
health services already located in
Seaforth.
"We're pretty excited. It's a beauti-
ful space and it's two and a half times
bigger than what we have now," she
says. "Having an office smack dap in
the middle of two counties is perfect
for us."
Cardno says the Seaforth office
will bring the mental health workers
closer to the Community Care Ac-
cess Centre, the Huron East Family
MUNICIPALITY OF HURON EAST
MUNICIPAL CLASS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
lieFOR THE REPLACEMENT OF JAMESTOWN ROAD BRIDGE
NOTICE,OF COMMENCEMENT
THE PROJECT:
The Municipality of Huron East is planning to replace Jamestown Road Bridge which spans a
tributary of the Maitland River along Jamestown Road approximately 0.5 km east of Molesworth Line
'(as shown on the accompanying key plan). Recent engineering inspections of the structure have
identified deterioration with several bridge components. To resolve these problems, the Municipality
is proposing to replace the structure.
At this time, it is anticipated that the bridge replacement would be completed during the 2010
construction season. The affected road section of Jamestown Road would be closed during the
construction period, and traffic would be diverted around the project site onto adjacent roads.
THE ENVIRONMENTAL SCREENING PROCESS:
The planning for this project is following the environmental screening process set out for Schedule B
activities under the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) document. The purpose
of the screening process is to identify any potential environmental impacts associated with the project
and to plan for appropriate mitigation of any impacts. The process includes consultation with the
public, stakeholders and government review agencies.
PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT:
The consultation program for this Class
EA includes several opportunities for
public involvement. For the initial phase
of the program, public input will be
received until October 31, 2009. Additional
opportunities for comment will be provided
as the process proceeds.
Any comments collected in conjunction
with this Class EA will be maintained on
file for use during the project and may be
included in project documentation. With
the exception of personal information, all
comments will become part of the public
record.

Barry Mills, Public Works Manager
Municipality of Huron East
Health Team, the Seaforth hospital
and Gateway Rural Health Research
Institute.
"When you see someone regularly,
you can forge a close working rela-
tionship," she says.
Cardno adds that she's hoping the
relocation to Seaforth will help de-
velop a closer relationship with the
Avon Maitland District School Board,
which is also located in Seaforth.
"Hopefully, the teachers can think
of us in a crisis," she says.
The 14 staff moving include nurses,
social workers, peer support special-
ists, vocational specialists, addiction
counsellors, psycho -social rehabili-
tation specialists and psychiatrists
in a number of programs including
the Alliance Assertive Community
Treatment Team, First Episode Psy-
chosis, the Huron -Perth Community
Treatment Order Program and the
main office of the Huron -Perth Se-
niors' Mental Health Program.
Cardno says that while 90 per cent
of the work of the mental health pro-
grams occur in people's homes, the
Seaforth office will provide space for
meetings, professional development
and office space for five psychiatrists
to meet with patients.
The psychiatrists involved include
Dr. Luis Cleto, Dr. Patrick Coulon,
Dr. Jeff McAuley, Dr. Craig Hudson
and Dr. Phil Neilsen.
Cardno says needed renovations
include transforming three exami-
nation rooms into a conference board
room and removing sinks from other
examination rooms to turn them into
interview areas. One examination
room will remain.
Cardno says she hopes that the
move can also help . the Alliance's
mental health programs create more
awareness about what they offer.
"We know one in five people are af-
fected by a mental illness and four
of five people have someone in their
family with a mental illness. We
want them to know there's help close
by and treatment too," she says.
Cardno says she hopes to move
into the Seaforth offices sometime
this fall.

replacement/repair of deteriorated bridge components, including replacement of the existing concrete
posts and railings with solid concrete barrier or parapet walls.
At this time, it is anticipated that the bridge rehabilitation project would be completed during the 2010
construction season. The affected road section of Cranbrook Road would be closed during the
construction period and traffic would be diverted around the project site onto adjacent roads.
