Food donations down but $4,000 raised at weekend drive
Sitting Hundertmji k
While food donations were down
by about a third from the last food
drive, Seaforth and District Food
Bank chair Maureen Spittal is hap-
py with the generosity of local people
contributing to the Thanksgiving
food drive from Oct. 1-3 at the Sea-
forth Foodland parking lot.
With gale force winds forcing vol-
unteers to hold down the canopy over
the barbecue as they got soaked from
the rain, Spittal says the weather
put a bit of a damper on the event.
"It's hard to be festive when the
weather is like that. People were run-
ning in and out of the grocery store
on a mission. And, our presence isn't
as visible when we have to huddle in
the truck," she says.
But, despite a reduction in food
donations, cash donations were up
to $1,500 at the Seaforth drive and
$2,500 was raised by Hugo and
Friedy Bontrup of Home on the
Range near Londesboro, with a Fall
Colours Trail Ride on Sunday, Oct.
4.
"We had 40 riders and we all had
fun in the rain," says Hugo.
"We were dressed for it and it
only rained during the home
stretch."
The trail ride crossed eight
properties from the Home of
the Range ranch to the Hullett
Conservation Area and back
between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.,
ending with a potluck dinner.
Spittal says the cash "will
help in a huge way," especially
when buying perishable food
that is also needed by food
bank clients.
She adds that she wouldn't
be surprised if the recession
affected donations a
bit, preventing people
who would otherwise
contribute.
Spittal says the bar-
becued hotdogs and
sausages . offered as
volunteers accepted
donations to fill the
truck also helped to
raise some money.
"Next time, expand-
ing the barbecue could
help," she says.

Province providing
$52,266 to support
RIDE spot checks
in Huron and Bruce
Local police departments will be receiving provincial
funding to continue Reduce Impaired Driving Every-
where (RIDE) spot checks in Huron and Bruce Coun-
ties.
Six local police services within the riding will receive
a total of $52,266.06 for this year's RIDE efforts to keep
the roads safe in our communities.
The Huron OPP's Goderich office will receive $9,533.83
while its South Huron office will receive $7,594.92. The
Wingham Police Service will receive $6,960.48.
Across Ontario, more than 8,000 officers will be funded
for a second year — double the number of officers com-
pared to 2007-08.
Last year police conducted close to 784,000 spot checks,
resulting in 970 impaired driving charges and 1,900 .12 -
hour licence suspensions.
"The RIDE program is an important part of the OPP's
efforts to keep our roads safe and I' applaud the decision
to provide the local OPP detachments in Huron -Bruce
with the tools they need to fight against impaired driv-
ing," said Carol Mitchell, MPP Huron -Bruce said in a re-
cent press release.
"RIDE checks provide a year round heightened level of
accountability to motorists to ensure that they are able
to drive safely. Road safety is of paramount importance
to the OPP and any program that promotes that core val-
ue is an asset to the community," added Const. Joanna
Van Mierlo, Community Services/Media Relations of the
Huron OPP in the same press release.
