With gale force winds forcing vol- unteers to hold down the canopy over the barbecue as they got soaked from the rain, Spittal says the weather put a bit of a damper on the event. "It's hard to be festive when the weather is like that. People were run- ning in and out of the grocery store on a mission. And, our presence isn't as visible when we have to huddle in the truck," she says. But, despite a reduction in food donations, cash donations were up to $1,500 at the Seaforth drive and $2,500 was raised by Hugo and Friedy Bontrup of Home on the Range near Londesboro, with a Fall Colours Trail Ride on Sunday, Oct. 4. "We had 40 riders and we all had fun in the rain," says Hugo. "We were dressed for it and it only rained during the home stretch." The trail ride crossed eight properties from the Home of the Range ranch to the Hullett Conservation Area and back between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., ending with a potluck dinner. Spittal says the cash "will help in a huge way," especially when buying perishable food that is also needed by food bank clients. She adds that she wouldn't be surprised if the recession affected donations a bit, preventing people who would otherwise contribute. Spittal says the bar- becued hotdogs and sausages . offered as volunteers accepted donations to fill the truck also helped to raise some money. "Next time, expand- ing the barbecue could help," she says.
