St. James senior boys' and girls' teams advaiice to the finals at soccer tournament St. James School's senior boys' soccer team began the Huron County tournament for Catholic schools with a game against St. Marys from Goderich, winning it 4-1. Next, the boys took on Sacred Heart School from Wingham, and earned another victory with a final score of 4-0. They faced Mount Carmel next, easily defeating them 4-0. In the quarter -final match, Sea - forth earned another shutout, with a3 -O win: In the semi-finals, Seaforth edged out St. Joseph's from Clinton, 1-0. The victory allowed the boys to advance to the finals, where they faced Zurich, but lost a hard-fought battle 1-0. "Without a doubt, the games were both well matched and played," says coach Angela Carter. "The reason for Seaforth's success was the boys ability to communicate and guide each other. That made the difference." �. •„- _ «....a.w...... •.�. • �9 .,. Carter also credits strong goal - keeping by Robert Campbell and Rory Whalen. The senior girls' squad started their tournament against Goder- ich, winning 4-0. Kourtney Ribey scored three goals and Lauren Be- dard scored one goal: Next, the team played Sacred Heart of Wingham. After falling behind 1-0, St. James came back with a goal from Sarah Devereaux to tie the game for a fi- nal score of 1-1. The girls' third game was against Mount Carmel. Despite a hard- fought effort, St. James lost 1-0. With a record of 1-1-1, St. James was tied for second placewith six points to advance to the quarter finals. . 'Andrea Bokkers scored first and Devereaux scored a penalty shot to secure a 2-0 win for St. James. In the semi-final game, St. James won 1-0 against Precious Blood, with the goal coming from Ribey. In the finals, St. James faced Ex- eter. The close, no -scoring game led the girls to a shootout after regula- tion time. Exeter shot first but missed, leav- ing Bokkers the chance to score, but she missed. Kate Flana- gan was in goal for St. James and stopped Exeter's sec- ond shootout attempt. Next, De- vereaux's shot was stof ,led by the Exeter keeper. An Ex- eter shooter then got one by Flanagan.
