Wilhelmina Laurie, president of • the Huron -Bruce Federal NDP Rid- ing Association, says the group has leads on candidates but no. definite declarations at this time. . She says the riding association is holding off on scheduling a nomi- nation meeting for now, but adds that she expects the group will hold a meeting soon after the writ has dropped. "We are not in any doubt of being prepared for a possible election," says Laurie, of Varna. "On the other hand, the Canadian people are not in favour of an election right now and our party has gone on the re- cord saying it is up to Mr. Harper to play ball with the other parties." Laurie says taxpayer money used to pay for an election would be bet- ter spent on "keeping down the TO BEAPART OF THE HOME OF THE WEEK Please CaII The Huron Expositor (519) 527-0240 ;QS DURNIN KITCHENS Custom made to suite your space 38 James Street, Dungannon, ON Tel: (519) 529-3761 Cell: (519) 440-7323 Email: duminkitchens@hurontel.on.ca Professional Kitchen Design, Consulting and 3D images of your Custom Kitchen Design so you can see how it's going to look before it gets made. The Conservatives' handling of employ- ment insurance benefits has been a significant bone of contention for the NDP, Laurie says. "There are a huge number of people who do .not qualify," she says. But last week, the Harper Conserva- tives promised to make changes to em- ployment insurance, including extending coverage for some employees. In order to cause an election, all three opposition parties would need to vote to defeat the government. "Certainly the. feeling now.is that the other three parties are no longer in the mood to support legislation, in particular something that has to do with economics, like a budget," says Nick 'Whyte, president of the 'The Canadian people are not in favour of an election right row,, -- Huron. -Bruce Federal NDP Riding Assoc. president Wilhelmina Laurie in early Huron -Bruce Federal Liberal Riding Associa- tion. "What I read in the newspapers certainly indicates there is a restlessness out there. It sounds like there is a pretty high probabil- ity of an election being called in the next few months," Whyte says. Whyte says the lo- cal Liberal riding as- sociation doesn't have a specific date set for a nomination meeting but expects one to be held later this month or October, if an election is called. Greg McClinchey, the 2008 Fed- eral Liberal candidate for Huron - Bruce, has announced he will not be seeking a nomination. Whyte says three candidates are expected to seek the federal Lib- eral nomination for Huron Bruce: Dr. Maarten Bokhout, of the Clin- ton Family Health Team, who lives near Blyth; Deb Homuth, a school principal from Exeter and Charlie Bagnato, the mayor of Brockton "I'm more accustomed to elec- tions every four years and that is the timeline that I'm probably most comfortable with," Whyte says. "But I know that we're in the worst financial crisis situation with the recession since the Great Depres- sion. I know that there are too many people unemployed. There are peo- ple with financial problems and I know there is a lot of discontent out there. Whether that translates into enough reason for an election for someone else who then could do better, I guess that's what an elec- tion is all about. The people make the final choice." In last year's federal election, Huron -Bruce' Conservative MP Ben Lobb defeated the Liberal candi- date McClinchey by a margin of 5,856 votes. NDP candidate Tony McQuail re- ceived 15 per cent of the vote. After the election, McQuail announced it would be the last timehe would run as a candidate for the NDP.
