As our parliamentarians herded back into session
in Ottawa, the opposition parties appeared to solidly
back each other . • , :nst the Conservative of govern-
ment and pope the etxnct threat 9f federal
election.
It would mark the fourth national election in: just
five years.
And, while the NP and the Bloc propped up the
ooks
Conservatives in a recent confidence vote, it still
as if anything could hap en in the next month.
So who is go' ' ' ? Who has the motiit to lose
and do Canadians resity want or need another else
tion?
It also begs the question: why an election now?
Poll results churned out ad nauseum Wit' ',rate that,
an election this fall would only replicate the parlia-
ment th Canadians elected last fall. There seems

the Liberals hold up Harper's recordieficit and the
worst unepployment numbers seen in decades, as
valid rens to call an election.
But we have listened to politicians telling us what
we should think long enough.
Keepin n mind the $300 million plus cost that an
election bnngs to taxpayers, we have to ask if gov-
ernment is functioning-ecientl and cooperatively.
Minority governrentshave to learn to compromise

takes effort and the belief that they all work for the
common good of the country and its citizens.
When politicians and parties are working for their
own self interests, the system and long-term vision
falls apart.
A fall election campaign would simply be a nega-
tive experience in which the Liberals rip Harper as a
mean-spirited individual with a hidden agenda while
the ,Conservatives are already targeting Ignatiieff as
a selfish individual who is "just in it for himself."
Do we really need to pay millions for that exer-
What we need is some shared common sense and
co-operative government. Forget the ncsty campaign
and regrettable election.

Confessions of a tired diehard fan
during an endless baseball season
While I've never really played
a lot of team sports, I've spent .a
lot of time in the stands cheer-
ing for the home team.
I guess after spending most
of high school as a cheerleader,
it was only natural to eventu-
allymarrya guy who spent a
loof hiime on the baseball
diamond or the basketball court.
And, that go -team -go attitude has extended
into parenthood with two kids who've played
a fair bit of team sport in baseball and broom -
ball.
But, the dirty little secret of this sports fan
- and I'm guessing of a fair number of moms
and maybe even dads out there - is that some-
times, even the most diehard fan. is quietly,
tiredly, wishing for the game to be over and
the tournament or the season to end.
Back in the days when I was' dating my hus-
band, I was far more vocal about the limits of
my endurance during the weekends of a seem-
ingly endless tournament.
Never actually actively cheering against his
team (at least out loud), I would indicate to
him that it wouldn't break my heart if a loss
occurred and we could all go home early. And,
there were the weekends, when, sorry honey, I
just wouldn't be able to make it to that tourna-
ment but call me when it's over.
However, it feels almost like bad parenting
to express the same sentiments about a game
your kids are playing.
We're supposed to be there, aren't we, thrill-
ing at every hit, catch or goal and encouraging

through all the rough patches.
And, most of the time, we do so
with enthusiasm and Willing-
ness.
But, during a baseball season
this year that began . when it
Susan was still necessary to wrap our-
Hundertmark selves in blankets while wear-
ing winter coats in the stands
and continued a month into the school year,
let's just say I'll be glad of the break until next
year.
My daughter's team just kept winning and
winning this year. And, while the games were
exciting, an extended season her team partic-
ipated in meant trips that were further and
further from home every win.
The team finally won it all over the weekend
in Owen Sound in a game that was a bit of a
nailbiter till the last inning of the third of the
best of five series.
But, I had to laugh when another mom told
me that while walking past the parents of
the opposing team, she was asked when she
thought our coach might replace our tiring
pitcher with the one who'd been warming up
on the sidelines.
They had been watching her pitch and
thought she might be the one to ensure our
team's win - an outcome they were hoping for
because they really didn't want to take the
two-hour drive back to our neck of the woods
again for another game.
I guess I wasn't the only one wearing out
during a very long season.
