Declining enrolment the issue at Oct. 22 information meetin

of schools following the approval of
an amendment from trustee Meg
Westley.
Asked about the omission by West-
ley, Ash explained that staff "went
back and forth on this issue" before
deciding to recommend leaving Wal-
lace out.
Even though the Sept. 8 report
states "there is excess space avail-
able at Wallace," he said it was felt
that it's unlikely the school will
eventually factor into any proposed
solutions.
The report shows that both Grey
Central and Listowel Central have
experienced greater percentage de-
clines in enrolment between 2002
and 2008 -- at 20.6 per cent and 15.7
per cent, respectively — compared to
Wallace.
Trustees argued, however, that
leaving the Wallace community out
of the accommodation review would
make . it impossible to include the
school in a solution.
And both Westley and fellow Strat-
ford trustee Doug Pratley main-
tained there remains a slight possi-
bility that a review committee would
propose such a solution.
The next step is an Oct. 22 infor-
mation meeting about the pending
accommodation review. A separate
information meeting will be held
the previous evening for the North
Perth/northeast Huron cluster.
Then comes the formation of Ac-
commodation Review Committees
(ARCs), which include membership
from each school council, each mu-
nicipality affected by the review,
principals, trustees, and administra-
tive staff.
Police seeking help after antique
furniture, worth $10,000, stolen
Close to $10,000 in antique furni-
ture was stolen from a vacant farm-
house on Newry Road in Huron East
sometime between May 10 and Aug.
7, reports Huron County Crime Stop-
pers and the Huron County OPP.
Police are asking for assistance in
solving the break, enter and theft.
Items stolen include two heavy
wooden doors with stained glass, an
oak bedroom suite, several porcelain
doorknobs and a dining room table.
A 16' white cube van had been ob-
- served parked in the driveway.
Anyone with related information
is asked to call Crime Stoppers at
1 -800 -222 -TIPS or submit a tip on-
line at www.hc-cs.ca.
All tips are anonymous, you will
never have to go to court and you
may be eligible for a cash reward of
up to $2,000.
These committees research the
current characteristics of the exist-
ing schools and suggest possible
solutions to the board's pupil ac-
commodation challenges, but this is
meant simply to provide information
to trustees.
Administrative staff may make
entirely different recommendations,
and trustees weigh the merits of the
different viewpoints before making a
decision.
A series of small amendments to
the board's accommodation review
policy, also approved at the Sept. 8
meeting, included a clause stating
administrative staff will prepare a
set of proposed solutions for presen-
tation at the beginning of the process
to the ARCs.
