FOUR-BEDROOM COUNTRY
CHARM
Country charm with a contemporary touch —
the user -al -metal roofing over part of the house
- will make this four-bedroom family home
stand out from its neighbours.
Entry,ls through a covered porch,.always wel-
come in inclement weather. The foyer, which
features a display area, leads through an
arched opening to the great -room complex.
The great room's gas fireplace is flanked by
entertainment units, and large windows look
out to a sundeck and the back garden beyond.
Separated from the great room by a half wall
and another archway, the dining room boasts
french doors that open onto a covered deck
with a dedicated barbecue area. A dramatic
double -height ceiling near the french doors will
add drama and elegance to this room.
The U-shaped counter configuration in the
spacious kitchen, which is open to the dining
area, promises efficiency, as does the central
work island, which includes a small sink.
Natural Tight will stream into the room through
the windows over the double sink. Extras
include a double over' and a phone desk, as
well as a walk-in pantry.

Concerned neighbours invited to Gateway
meeting on proposed medical buildi•
Susan Hundertmark

The Gateway Rural Health Re-
search Institute invited interested
neighbours to discuss the rezoning
application for the land where a new
medical building is proposed.
Gateway president Lin Steffler
says holding a _public meeting will
allow neighbours to express any
concerns they have about the insti-
tute's plans for the building.
Information from Monday's meet-
ing was not available at press time.
It seems a logical move. There
have been concerns expressed and
we don't want anyone to think we're
ruining their quality of life," says
Steffler.
The meeting was held Sept. 14 at
7:30 p.m. in the main lobby of the
Huron East Health Centre.
Anyone attending was able to view
a preliminary draft site plan show-
ing the suggested placement of the
building, parking and lighting and
provide comments and suggestions
about the development.
Gateway recently received the do-
nation of a 2.36 acre of land from
family of A.Y. and Winn McLean and
the board plans to build a one -store
building that would house the re
search institute and a lecture hall.
A handful of neighbours attende
a recent council meeting where th
rezoning request was granted. Tha
night, neighbours expressed con
cerns about increased traffic and de
creased property values.
While the Gateway board is stil
looking at preliminary concept draw
ings, Steffler says the new building
will likely be ,anywhere from 10,00
to 16,500 square feet and include
lecture hall that would hold 120 stu
dents. .
Gateway and the University of Wa-
terloo are working on a memoran-
dum of understanding that would
outline what the two organizations
could do for each other.
'Gateway is all about research
but other components like educa-
tion and training are also involved
in research. We're not just running
studies,"says Sterner, adding that a
partnership with universities would
give students a chance to experience
both research and a rural health-
care setting.
"It would be an opportunity for
students and residents in a health-
d
e

a
care field to get more experience an
training," she says.
While it's not yet clear which Uni
versity of Wa courses might b
involved with t Gateway lector
hall, Steffler says the new buildin
will be equipped with teleconferenc
ing and videoconferencing techology
to allow students and lecturers to b
in either location.
"This is the way education is go
ing," she says, adding that the Uni
versity of Waterloo is being consult
ed about how the lecture hall should
be configured.
Steffler says that with the rapid
way the Huron East Health Centre
has filled up with doctors and al
led health professionals, Gateway's
current space in the health centre
might be needed soon to house more
amily physicians.
"They're running out of room here
and they'll likely need space for
more doctors - we all want to see
that and Gateway has to have a
lace to go,"she says from the two
physician suites Gateway is renting
t the health centre.
She adds that along with research
director Dr. Claudio Munoz, the new
building will need to house two more
ng
d research coordinator positions which
will be filled soon along with an ex-
- ecutive director and office staff.
e While the Gateway board applied
n recently for $3 million from Indus -
g try Canada for the money to build
- its new building, Stefflersays the
proposal was turned down, mainly
e because of concern that the build-
ing couldn't be put up by the March,
- 2010 deadline.
- "It's disappointing but we've been
- encouraged to resubmit. It was go-
ing to be really difficult to put it
together that quickly and this way
we can take the next few months
to make the vision very clear," she
says.
With the Gateway board engag-
ing in a strategic planning session
this fall, the board will be looking
at fundraising and Steffler says the
board will do all the preparation
necessary to be ready to build once
funding comes through. ,
"We've already received three or
four sizeable donations and when
they come that . smoothly and that
quickly, you know it's got to be right.
Others are sharing our vision and
that's so exciting," she says.
