Cooler summer means
fewer smog days
One positive aspect of
having a cooler than aver-
age summer this year in
Huron County is that the
region experienced fewer
smog days than usual.
Paul Dawson, envi-
ronmental public health
manager for Huron Coun-
ty Health Unit, says the
Ontario Ministry of the
Environment issued two
smog advisories over four.
days»- one on May 21. and
the other from Aug..15-
17.
It's fewer than last year,
which experienced three
smog advisories over sev-
en days.
"It usually happens on
very hot days where the
air holds pollutants closer
to the ground," Dawson
says, adding that high
temperatures in Septem-
ber may still cause an-
other smog day.
"We're still not in the
clear," he says.
Dawson says during a
smog -advisory day, elder-
ly people and those with
respiratory illnesses - are
at the highest risk and
should stay indoors.
There are a number of
things people can do on
hot, smoggy days to re-
duce the amount of air
pollution going into the
air, Dawson says.
lb help prevent a smog
day, people should try
to avoid fast food drive-
thrus, beach fires, barbe-
cues, gas -powered lawn-
mowers and make efforts
to carpool.
