Federal grant to HBDC will benefit local small businesses

A $750,000 federal grant will in-
crease the lending pool available to
small businesses at the Huron Busi-
ness Development Corporation to $4
million.
"We've been asking for a top -up
and received $300,000 earlier this
year but we used that up quickly
when the economy started to visibly
go south," said Jim Niesen, business
and loans manager at the HBDC.
Neisen said the additional $750,000
will benefit another 15 to 20 Huron
County businesses looking for a high
risk loan and affect as many as 150
local jobs.
"A lot of business owners are strug-
gling with their cash flow with the
current low ebb of the economy and
this money will help them stay in
business until the Huron County
public starts buying again," said
Neisen.
The HBDC can lend up to $150,000
at a time to local small business own-
ers and Neisen said at least half of
the small businesses in Huron Coun-
ty have used the HBDC's services
over the past 16
years. •

grant.
