Boxing, lacrosse and a number of
other activities will be offered this
fall by the Vanastra Recreation Cen-
tre.
Beginning Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. and
running every Wednesday until Nov.
4, boxing classes will be offered at
the recreation centre by members of

mom.
Those interested in signing up will
learn the fundamentals of boxing and
training, including using a punching
bag, rope jumping and other cardio-
vascular exercises.
A second set of sessions will run
Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
from Jan. 6 to Feb. 24. The cost is
$85.
"It's a nice addition to our facil-
ity," says Lissa
Berard, facility
manager at the
Vanastra Rec-
reation Centre.
"We're hoping
that Huron East
takes an inter-
est."
Another pro-
gram that Be-
rard is hoping
will become pop-
ular with resi-
dents looking to
get active is the
Red Cross Swim
Sports program.
It's specifically
targeted towards
teens andyoung
adults who are
looking for an ac-
tivity in the pool

ey, diving and a lifesaving competi-
tion are the aquatic sports scheduled
for this $70 program, which runs Fri-
days from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. starting
Sept. 18 until Nov 6. The program
will start up again in 2010 from Jan.
8 until Feb. 26.
The North Perth Outlaws Lacrosse
Association will be leading the la-
crosse program, targeting young-
sters aged six to 12.
The five-week introductory pro-
gram is running Thursdays at 6 p.m.
starting Sept. 10 until Oct. 8. The
cost is $40.
Berard says the first four weeks of
the program will teach the proper
skills and techniques of the game,
with the final week focusing on play-
ing games.
"It's our goal to see if there is an
interest in lacrosse," Berard says.
"Then we'll continue with the pro-
gram and maybe organize a team."
Another program, called "In Mo-
tion for Tots," is encouraging parents
to bring along their young children
to participate in group activities that
use music and movement to help de-
velop their motor skills, balance and
co-ordination.
"We developed this program be-
cause other than pre-school swim-
ming, we didn't have anything for
very young kids, who are too little
for hockey and other sports," Berard
says. "Parents were also looking for
something for that age group and
with this, parents and kids do it to-
gether."
Berard says the recreation centre
staff will use floor mats, a mini -bal-
ance beam and a trampoline during
the 30 -minute program.
"In Motion for Zbts" is running
Mondays from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.,
starting Sept. 14 until Nov 2. A sec-
ond set of sessions will begin Jan. 4
until Feb. 22.
The program is also offered on
Tuesday mornings from 10 until
10:45 a.m. from Sept. 15 to Nov 3,
with a second set of sessions running
Jan. 5 until Feb. 23.
The cost is $63, with an option to
include a swim in the pool for $83.
More programs include two semi-
nars on scrapbooking, which run
Oct. 3 or Jan. 16 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
for $40. The registration deadline is.
Sept. 29 for the first session and Jan.
11 for the second.
Indoor Walking Wednesday will be
held for no charge at the recreation
centre, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The centre has teamed up with
Town and Country Support Services
to offer the program, which also in-
cludes Nordic walking on Thursdays
from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., from
Sept. 17 until Oct. 8 for a cost of
$20.
There is lots of space available to
sign up for any of the programs of-
fered at the Vanastra Recreation
Centre, call 519-482-3544.
