Australian teacher Rob Young fits right in at
Huron Centennial Public School
Dan Schwab
From the beaches of Australia to
the shores of Lake Huron, Rob Young
has come from the other side of the
world to teach the Grade 8 class at
Huron Centennial Public School.
He arrived last December, having
exchanged schools with Huron Cen-
tennial teacher Laureen Ayers, who
moved into his home in the Sun-
shine Coast, on the eastern shore of
Australia.
Young took over Ayers' home in
Bayfield, settling in with his wife
and dog.
He taught math and; English to
various classes last term and this
year, science, history and geography
are the other subjects he'll be teach-
ing.
While many of the students know
him from last year, Young says
they're always curious about his
homeland.
"There is some conception that we
have kangaroos hopping down the
street," he says, with a laugh. "They
ask, `Isn't it such a dangerous place,'
because they hear about all these
spiders and sharks we have there."
There's also just a little confusion
about the way Australians and Ca-
nadians pronounce the same words.
"They have a few accent issues,"
Young says, adding that sometimes
the students will ask him to repeat
a word or two. "Some things we say
differently. There are some funny
ones like an eraser, we call that a
rubber back home. Of course, you
don't call it that here." •
He says the elementary school
curriculum in Australia is similar
to the subjects being taught in Can-
ada.
"There are more similiarities than
there are differences, really," he
says.
Young has posted pictures on the
wall of his classroom, showing beau-
tiful white sand beaches near his
home and his former school, Moun-
tain Creek.
He's been to Canada before, when
he participated in . a teacher ex-
change that sent him to a school in
Vancouver in 2004.
"In the exchange program, you
get to experience other cultures and
other parts of t . = World," he says.
"It's a great o , ' ortunity to see other
parts of the coun-
try, on weekends
and holidays."
During his time
off school here,
Young has trav-
eled to Niagara
Falls, Montreal,
Boston, Wash-
ington and even
made a trip to
Europe. He's also
had relatives
from Australia
come over for a
visit.
Young has been
teaching for 35
years and says
this will likely
be the last time
he participates
in a teacher ex-
change.
"Everyone gets
homesick after a
while," he says.
"But I'm certain-
ly glad I came
here. The kids
are great."
