County council to make final decision on
severance of Tuckersmith property
Silvan Hundertmark.
Huron East will have to convince
Huron County council if the sever-
ance of surplus farm dwelling on a
Tuckersmith property is to be ap-
proved.
A recorded vote of 8-4 by Huron
East council defeated a motion to
deny Ingrid Love's request to sever a
farm dwelling from a 148 -acre farm
in Tuckersmith at council's Sept. 1
meeting.
"We do not get a final say. If we vote
against this, we have to go to the
county and convince them. We can
attend the meeting and argue our
reasons but • county council makes
the decision," Clerk -Administrator
Jack McLachlan warned councillors
before the vote.

"If you vote
against this,
you're voting
against your
own official plan.
I haveto point
that out," he
added:
County plan-
ner Carol Leem-
ing recommend-
ed against the
severance since
no other farm
dwelling will be
left to the owner,
is not surplus to
the needs of an
area. farmer and
does not meet
the intent of sur-
plus farm house
severance policies.
In her written arguments, Leem-
ing pointed out that the Huron East
official plan encourages farm resi-
dences which become surplus to be
held with the farm land as a com-
plete farm unit. But, under certain
circumstances, surplus residences
may be severed and sold.
"The basis of denying the appli-
cant is that it's not an area farmer,"
said McLachlan.
Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan
agreed with Leeming, saying that
while Huron East allows some sev
erances, the rules are there to pro-
tect area farmers.
"I'm not comfortable breaking the
rules on this occasion. I'm content
to stick with the rules as we have
them now," he said.
McKillop Coun. Bill Siemon said
that Huron East's planning rules
are progressive but that agreeing to
thissituation would create a "land-
slide" of severance applications.
Tuckersmith Coun. Les Falconer
said he supported Love's severance
application since the Loves have
owned the property since 1981 and
farmed it for 29 years until Ingrid's
husband.Robert passed away.
"This application involves an older
lady and I agree we should save the
building if we can," said Falconer.
Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath
agreed with Falconer.
"Our buildings are our tax base,
not the land and without that build-
ing, we'll get two and a half miles
with nothing on it and it still costs
money to plow and maintain the
roads. Not everybody wants to live
in town," said McGrath.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler said
the severance will allow the people
who have been renting the Love
house since 2003 to purchase the
house and maintain it.
"I think if this isn't allowed, the
house will come down," he said.
"Mrs. Love isn't trying to do any-
thing but accommodate the people
living in the house."
Voting in favour of denying the
severance were MacLellan, Siemon,
Seaforth Coun. Bob Fisher and
Brussels Coun. Frank Stretton.
Voting against denying the sev-
erance were Steffer, Falconer,
McGrath, Mayor Joe Seili, Grey
Coun. Orval Bauer, McKillop Coun.
Andrew Flowers, Grey Coun. Alvin
McLellan and Brussels Coun. David
Blaney.
Wardens sees trouble in 'buy local
County Warden Ken Oke
is counting himself among
those who believe it is un-
wise to push the "buy local"
campaign.
Suggesting doing so is the
equivalent of the growing
movement in the United
States to close the doors to
imports, Oke said .a 'buy
fresh' campaign would
better serve producers
and consumers.
"All we're doing is
looking for trouble,"
said Oke, adding there
aren't enough Canadi-
ans to keep Canadian
farmers financially vi-
able.
Oke said rather than
send out the signal
that "don't be buying
our products because

wise to encourage consum-
ers to seek out the freshest
possible products.
Meanwhile, Coun. Neil
Rintoul (Ashfield Colborne
Wawanosh) said the federal
government still has a lot of
work to do with regard to its
labelling legislation.
"The labelling rules have
to be changed," said Rintoul,
noting otherwise Canadians
will continue to buy goods
they think are made in Can-
ada, when in fact they were
only packaged here.
