and Christa Bennett, who'll both be
teaching at Downie Central School this
year.
Heidi Martin has left the school
to work at Huron Centennial Public
School, where she is teaching the Grade
3/4 class.
Teachers Jenn Regier and Robyn Car-
nochan are off on maternity leave, while
Fanny Geleyrise and Michelle Meikle
have also moved to new schools.
Construction is still ongoing as stu-
dents at SPS begin the school year this
month, as a new gym floor is being in-
stalled.
"We were originally expecting it to be
finished by September, but now it prob-
ably won't be completed until October,"
says SPS principal Cheryl Peach.
Other changes at the school include
the French classroom being converted
into a Best Start classroom. The Before
and After School Day Care program
will now run out of SPS.
St. James School is also welcoming a
handful of new teachers this year.
Sarah Noakes will be partially tak-
ing over the kindergarten class, filling
in for Karen Kramers, who is off on ma-
ternity leave.
Noakes will teach the class half of the
time, while Jenny Ritesma will teach
the class the remainder of the time.
Ritesma is also teaching the Grade 5/6
class this year.
Jennifer Schoonderwoerd is a new re-
source teacher at the school, who will
also be in the Grade 3 classroom.
Angela Carter, the former resource
teacher, is now teaching Grade 7/8.
Students also have a different school
day schedule this year.
The final recess will occur much later
in the day, from 3:05 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.,
with school being dismissed at 3:25
p.m.
Principal Joanne Lombardi says en-
rolment is steady, with about 188 stu-
dents attending this year.
"We're excited," she says. "We gradu-
ated 29 students last year, but we have
a whopping 22 junior kindergarteners
coming in."
At Huron Centennial Public School,
students are welcoming a new princi-
pal and vice principal, along with a few
new teachers.
New principal Deb Johnson, who
spent last year teaching in Goderich, is
taking over the role from former prin-
cipal Deb Gill, who is now principal at
Goderich Public School.
Last year's vice principal Marie
Mitchell has left the school and has
been replaced by Kerry Carlyle.
New teacher Ian Dekker will be fill-
ing in for Julie Knoblauch-Heimrichin
the Grade 6/7 class as she's off on ma-
ternity leave and Lisa Blurnhagen is
filling in for Sonia Brady as a special
education resource teacher, during her
maternity leave.
At St. Columban School, principal
Judy Merkel and the rest of the staff
are welcoming Jacquie Timmermans
as the new Grade 5/6 teacher and Ja-
net Thomson as a new educational as-
sistant.
St. Patrick's. School in Dublin is wel-
coming Hope Shantz as the new kin-
dergarten teacher, who is filling in for
Rosa Ort, who is on maternity leave.
