After a four-year absence, Georgian Col-
lege will. once again offer courses in Seaforth
for students to gain a Teaching and Training
Adults Certificate of Achievement.
Barb Carriere, manager of con-
tinuing education and apprentice-
ship at the College, says the course
was originally designed to recruit
instructors for the practical nurs-
ing course that is currently offered
annually in Seaforth.
"Part of the reason why we're
bringing it back is because as a
college, we like to know we have a
good size of people with training;"
Carriere says.
The program is designed for peo-
ple interested in teaching or train-
ing others, or to refine the skills of
current practitioners.
While Carriere says the cours-
es will better prepare instructors
for the practical nursing program,
completion of the course will also come
in- handy for professionals in a supervisory or
management role in their workplaces. Indus-
try trainers and academic teachers are also
suitable candidates for the program.
"The skills are very general and can be used
anywhere," Carriere says. "And it's local. There
are not a whole lot of education opportunities
in rural communities."
The course will be broken up into eight mod-
ules that run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Satur-
days, with the first module being offered on
Sept. 19.
The final module will be
held on Nov 21. All will be of-
fered at the Huron Health Cen-
tre, at 32B Centennial Drive.
The subjects of the
modules includes "preparing
a lesson or workshop," "mi-
cro teaching clinic," "engaging
adult learners" and "tools for
teaching and training."
The cost for most of the
modules is $126, with one cost-
ing $85 and another $161.
"It's pay as you go for
each module," Carriere says.
"Most students have jobs so
accessing the course on Satur-
days is typically easier too."
So far, three people have signed
up. The courses can accnodate 25 people.
