Local lawn bowlers won silver in the
Canadian National Lawn Bowling cham-
pionships in Victoria, B.C.
"We beat Alberta on Friday but lost to
them in the gold medal game," says team
member Carol Carter, who bowls for the
Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club.

the 18 Medals at the nationals, including
two silvers and four birvnze. •
Carter's team lost two games during
the nationals, one to the other. Ontario
team and one to Nova Scotia.
But, the team had no complaints about
the weather or conditions on the greens.
"The weather was just super. We didn't
have a drop of rain," she says, adding
that the greens were "quick and slopy."
"We were on faster greens and we
weren't getting the lines," Carter says of
the championship game.
"You have to have al little luck and they
just outbowled us," she says.

Golf takes discipline; author says
From Page 14 that sometimes a little negativity can
"You've got to be disciplined enough
to know where you are - that might be
just aiming to make the cuts or that
could be aiming to win," he said.
Skura said that great golfers also
work with the characteristics' they
have instead of trying to change
them.
"If you ever get a teacher who tells
you that you have an inherent flaw,
run away from him because it's not
true," he said, adding that Woods
never tried to rebuild his swing but
did try to refine it.
"You've got DNA registered inside of
you, a combination of what you can do
and what you think you can do. Don't
change your ideosyncracies - you can
massage it until it gets better and it's
still you," he said.
Skura said that every golfer has a
part of the game that is the weakest
link - even after improvements that
weakest link will always be there.
"Work with the variables you have
and it'll be good," he said.
Skura also warned against unre-
alistically positive self -talk, adding
be grounding.
"What happens after filling yourself
full of positive affirmations is your
Drain says you're full of baloney since
reality is not matching what you're
saying. Occasionally, you have to give
yourself a dose of reality," he said.
Skura said he hopes golfers real-
ize that understanding how people
learn will help
them continue
to improve their
games through-
out adulthood.
"Realize you
made the great-
est progress with
learning from
ages 10-20 but I
believe you can
make almost as
much progress in
the next 10 years
if you understand
how you learn.
The high achiev-
ers do that," he
said. /
