Council debates about
paying $400 fee it
charged to farmer

A $400 fee charged to Bryan Mc-
Clure when a highhoe . was rented to
remove his barn roof from a munici-
pal road was a subject of discussion
at Huron East's Aug. 25 meeting.
Bryan and Sharlene McClure wrote
a letter to Tuckersmith Coun. Larry
McGrath complaining about getting
a bill from Huron East when the mu- .
nicipality booked the equipment.
The roof of the McClure's cattle
barn was torn off during a storm last
April and landed in the middle of
Bridge Road, closing it for much of
the weekend.
"After thinking about it for a day,
I thought when the township called
the highhoe they took all responsibil-
ity and should pay the bill," said the
letter.
In the letter, the McClures said
they tried to pull the roof off the road
themselves but it broke apart. Then,
the municipal roads foreman told
them he was responsible for clearing
the road.
"They were trying to look after it
themselves," said McGrath to coun-:
cil, adding that he thought the mu-
nicipality should pay the bill if staff
ordered the highhoe.
McGrath then withdrew the mo-
tion after learning that insurance
paid for the $400.
Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLel-
lan pointed out that the road fore-
man does have the responsibility to
do what he can to open a municipal
road.
"It's not unreasonable to bring in a
highhoe and $400 doesn't sound like
an outrageous amount. This needs to
stand where it is," said MacLellan.
Brussels Coun. David Blaney said
he thought the municipality got
in trouble "because we tried to be
nice."
"They went above and beyond the
call of duty in trying to be . helpful,"
he said.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Stef ler said
that when a farmer is plowing and
leaves mud on municipal roads and
the municipality has to call in a
grader to clear the road, the farmer
isn't charged.
But, Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan said the farmer is charged
in that situation.
"And, we've sent bills out when the
roads have been damaged," he said.
Mayor Joe Seili asked if council
had any other direction for staff on
the issue but got no response.
"No direction - I want that pointed '>
out," he said.
