Councillors unconvinced
about calorie counts
A call from the Ontario Medical Association to require
calorie coltson menu boards at chain restaurants and
school cafeterias was defeated by Huron East council at
its Aug. 25 meeting.
"We don't need to add more paperwork to the system.
And, if you don't realize that eating french fries eight
times a week is bad for you, you need more help than
a list of calories on a menu board," said Deputy Mayor
Bernie MacLellan.
The letter from the OMA says that a quarter of Cana-
dian children are overweight or obese and that 75 per
cent of those children become obese adults.
"As a physician, I see patients everyday who want to
lose weight to improve their health, but don't have the
basic information to make healthier food decisions. Ca-
loric labelling on menus is a simple and effective way to
help patients make better choices for their own health,"
says the letter.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler joked that calorie counting
won't work for many of the Huron East councillors.
"Looking around the table, it's too late to save most of
us," he said.
South West
LHIN meeting
The South West LHIN (Local Health Integration Net-
work) will be holding a "board engagement session" in
Seaforth on Sept. 9 at the Huron East Health Centre.
"The South West LHIN board of directors holds their
board committee meetings on the second Wednesday of
each month and in order to provide maximum opportu-
nity for interaction from every area of our LHIN, we are
holding these meetings in communities outside of Lon-
don," says an email Huron East received from corporate
coordinator Sue Davey, of the South West LHIN.
The meeting will be held from 10 a.m. until noon.
Run-off in Vanastra
Residents of Andrew Court in Vanastra sent a petition
to Huron East council Aug. 10 asking the municipality to
fix water run-off problems.
"Although we are very thankful for your attempts to
grade and regrade the land, the problem still persists
and we feel a much more suitable (and in the long term
more cost effective) solution would be to use some of our
substantial tax dollars to build curbs to completely elimi-
nate this concern," said the petition.
The petition also asked for some trees to be planted on
the boulevards "to soak up the run-off as well as beautify
our lovely neighbourhood."
the petition is signed by residents of nine houses on An-
drew Court. It was referred to the Public Works Coordi-
nator.

and going at all hours," she said.
Blaney said he thought office buildings make good
neighbours and don't decrease property values.
"I really have no issue with it," he said.
Seili said the Gateway development will bring health
benefits to the community as well as economic benefits.
"If we get a university extension here, that's economic
growth. If you want to control who your neighbours are,
buy the property," he said.
"This could retain students and nurses and we're go-
ingto block it? This will likely go to the OMB (Ontario
Municipal Board) like everything else lately but I say we
need to forge ahead," said Seili.
