Area farmers preparing for Huron County Plowing Match
Competitors In more than a dozen classes will converge at Down farm near Exeter
Area farmers are getting ready
to show off their *plowing expertise
at the 82nd Annual Huron County
Plowing Match, which will be held
Friday, Aug. 28.
This year's county
plowing match is be-
ing hostedby Bob and
Pat Down and Huron
County Warden Ken
Oke. It will be held at
the Down Farm at the
corner of Highway 4
and . Hurondale Road,
located two conces-
sions north of Exeter.
"There's a lot more
to competition plow-
ing than going in a
straight line," • says
event co -host Warden
Oke. "In an agricultur-
ally rich county such as Huron, plow-
ing is a fine art."
Jeff McGavin; president of the Hu-
ron Plowmen's Association, says new
spectators sometimes think it's all
about straight lines but learn about
plowing by watchingand talking to
competitors at the match.
McGavin explains that judges look
for details such as the wheat stubble
being neatly buried and the consis-
tency and depth of the furrow.
The plowing competitions run from
9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and involve com-
petitors in more than a dozen classes
including horse-drawn plows and
antique tractors. This event is open
to the public with a free will dona-
tion collected at the gate.
Other events include a pancake
breakfast at 7:30 to 10
a.m. agricultural dis-
plays and exhibits, silent
anfl live auction, and an
awards barbecue sup-
per held at 5 p.m. in the
Agricultural Building at
South Huron Recreation
Centre in Exeter, where
Huron County's Queen
of the Furrow will be
crowned.
Graeme . Craig, an
Ontario Plowmen's As-
sociation Director, says
the art of plowing is . di-
minishing a bit thanks
to no -plow planting techniques, but
interest in Huron County's compe-'
tition has increased in the last few
years.
A Junior Match Day is held on
Thursday, Aug. 27 with coaching and
practice starting at 9 a.m. and the
actual match running from noon un-
til 3 p.m. The Princess Contest will
be held from .11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Plowing Matches have been part of
the agricultural history in Ontario
for well over a century. Originally
these matches not only gave farmers
and opportunity to display their skill
in the handling of a walking plow,
but to show their fine teams of hors-
es, many of which were imported or
from imported stock.

ing rules and regulations for com-
petitors, please consult the Official
Program for the 82nd Huron County
Plowing Match.
